I have always considered The Cramps to be a sort of Rockabilly-Punk hybrid.
But then, Rockabilly itself is actually thee original Punk music, so my term may be a bit of a misnomer. Perhaps a better label would be Asylumbilly (!!?)

for me - if push comes to shove - the absolute perfect example of rock n roll is Eddie Cochran's Something Else...

I like a lot of the people already mentioned, and Cliff Gallup is probably my favourite rockabilly guitar player.

I long ago bought what was then the complete run of THAT'LL FLAT GET IT here in the classifieds. Now I see that Bear Family has added at least seven volumes to my original run since then. Must . . . resist . . . completist . . . urges

That's about how I like my rockabilly, though, on a various artists comp.

there might be songs that are more, uh, sophisticated, more innovative, more this, more that, but nothing epitomizes the absolute essence of rock n roll more than that song methinks... it's perfect in every respect...

Unlike some 50s stuff Cochran still sound really punchy.

They're usually classified as psychobilly, a subgenre which they are largely responsible for.

About 10 or 12 grand MIGHT get you an original copy of this on Chess - though I understand it's also (not surprisingly) been "booted" on a repro:

no idea how many times I saw the Flat Duo Jets back in the '80s and '90s, but Dex could almost always bring it... and even when he didn't, it was a colossal train wreck worth seeing! He was also much "realer" than any of the neo-rockabilly and psychobilly guys because he never really cared if he had the look, the right amp, the right guitar (though he favored a Silvertone, I've also seen him thrash a cheap Mexican Strat onstage)... he just breathed rock n roll, especially on that debut LP

Another +1 for Wanda Jackson's 50s/60s material. Her raspy vocals are amazing in this genre.

I'm pretty picky about neo-rockabilly. One band that managed to capture all the elements of the classic sound was Go Cat Go. They were able to replicate the classic sound without seeming imitative.
