Calling James Brown politically correct is just... Incorrect. o_O

    Maybe

But his live album has been at or near the top of every RS poll of live albums for as long as I can remember.
    That and Dusty in Memphis.

There’s a generational thing going on. Brown is one of the greats but you had to be there to appreciate that album.

john lennonist There ONCE was a NOTE, PURE and EASY...

    List is pretty good, but

I'd put "Live at Leeds" #1 -- but, as it's listed as #4, that's not so bad (as far as RS lists are concerned)

Rory Gallagher "Irish tour '74" not being on the list is a glaring omission!

Bob Marley and the Wailers, ‘Live!’ should be higher

I'd put the Muddy Waters album above the BB King as far as Blues is concerned

I love Neil to death but "Time Fades Away" is one of his worst albums, IMO

    "Waiting for Columbus"
by Little Feat should be WAAAAY higher than #49

And KISS being anywhere on this list is a joke

    KISS
at #6, Little Feat at #49 = :wtf:  :faint:

Yeah...underwhelming, but the only value "lists" of this kind have are as conversation starters. Maybe someone should compile the 50 Greatest Lists of All Time for us to debate and discuss...?

The list itself is mostly predictable, but I'd agree the absence of both The Concert For Bangladesh and Van Morrison's It's Too Late To Stop Now throws shame on Rolling Stone's editorial staff (as does the inclusion of Nirvana's flaccid Unplugged In NYC ). I do love James Brown At the Apollo, though.

    Strictly my opinion, though...

Made in Japan at 32. And I stopped scrolling immediately.

And it's Strange Kind of Woman, moronnn!

  7. I just quickly perused the list and don't have time for any in-depth comment at the moment, but I agree - the exclusion of It's Too Late to Stop Now borders on the absurd. Van at the peak of his powers with a crack live band - beautifully paced and recorded and absolutely essential.

The UFO live album is fantastic. Better than Deep Purple's Live In Japan.

No room apparently for Humble Pie's Rockin' The Fillmore, which was so good all four shows were ultimately reissued to expand the experience.

The Last Waltz. Come on. Many great performances in addition to the Band's.

    J. Geils Band -- Full House. Whammer Jammer, baby.

Find George Jones' Live at Gilley's 1979. Not sure it ever got an official release, but everybody's totally drunk, including George. It's as wild and raucous as any rock live album I've ever heard. The most recent place I've seen it is on Spotify as "Back In The Saddle."

As far as soul goes, it’s a fair list - Donny Hathaway, Aretha, Bill Withers, Sam Cooke (rightly Harlem Square Club not the Copa) and JB (though too high at No.1). But no Curtis Mayfield, EWF or Otis Redding. Humble Pie, Van Morrison and Clapton Unplugged seem big omissions, especially Too Late to Stop Now.

How many lists until they realize that "Live in Cook County Jail" is a better live album than "Live at the Regal"?
