One last observation: I think I've realized that I've been so spoiled with all the great Blu-Rays they've been putting out lately, the idea of traveling to another city and spending hundreds of dollars to squeeze into a stadium to see them is just not appealing...

Maybe Costello's assessment is brutal, but it sounds about right. And you know what? Most of the audience is only there to see the spectacle and to be able to say they were there--so it's commercial transaction between two parties who know exactly what they are going to get.

I don't think Elvis meant it as a slam -- he was fairly respectful, just sort of acknowledging how they had evolved toward an "entertainment above all else" mindset.

    Exactly right.

At this point, Jagger's prancing and pointing skyward routine has moved even beyond self-parody. The whole thing is a bit of a circus.

Supposedly coming in the spring, with a few new songs released first.

Bernard Fowler in the studio, presumably with the Stones. The constant presence of Steve Jordan makes me irrationally hopeful.

The London show this summer was my favourite gig of the year...getting lucky dip tickets for £30 each and then sneaking into a pair of top priced seats in an incredible location was the icing on the cake...

Good. I hope they have one more decent album in them.

Me too, although I suspect Jagger will sabotage it by trying too hard to be "modern". If they gave Keith complete production control, it'd be fantastic.

Glad you enjoyed yourself despite Jagger's "prancing and finger pointing".

That's why Steve Jordan in the studio is heartening...it sounds like Keith is fighting hard to make this a balanced, organic record instead of just polishing up Mick's demos Bigger Bang-style.

This is why I dig Voodoo Lounge so much, it sounds like a Keith record and for that reason I think it has held up better than Bridges or Steel Wheels.

This guy sounds beyond appalling, is he at all related to an infamous ex Stones manager?

Yeah I’ve given up on stadium shows altogether.
Even supposedly “good” seats at a stadium show don’t seem very good to me . There is no sense of concert intimacy sitting in a stadium a million miles away, reduced to watching the video screens .

Add the general hassles of stadium shows , possible lousy weather, larger crowds, etc., the shows don’t seem like a great experience anymore , for me

I'm now the same age Mick was during the 1994 tour!

A good stadium show can be an amazing experience - there's a charge that such a huge crowd brings that can't happen in a small venue.

Obviously you're more likely to have a good view in a small venue, but seats in the first 10 rows on the field are good. I was 4th row for the Stones in Pittsburgh 3 years ago and was totally happy with that location.

Less happy with the $400 ticket price, though! :sigh:

My favorite song on Steel Wheels, Almost Hear You Sigh, originated during the sessions for Keith’s first solo album. While I don’t hate Mick, far from it, Voodoo Lounge is dragged down by Blinded By Rainbows, maybe my least favorite Stones track ever, and a leftover from Mick’s Wandering Spirit. Keith had a bigger hand in Steel Wheels than Voodoo Lounge, and it shows.

    Been there done that.

The huge crowds charge means nothing to me but if you enjoy that...great.

Personally, I feel rock and roll shows need to be indoors not in football stadiums or whatever.

Rock isn’t sleazy enough sitting out in the sun the same as if I’m at a Chicago Bears game . :p

In my limited experience with really big concerts, there can be magical moments when the crowd participates in a sing-along with the band, but that’s a crap shoot, and, if the magic doesn’t happen then you are a hundred yards away from stick figures on stage and it’s not much fun.

Since very few rock concerts take place in daylight, that's not a real concern, is it?

No - you are 100 yards away. As I've stated, I won't go to stadium shows if I'm gonna be a long way from the stage!

And hey, this thread shows some people like the seats a long way from the stage!
