Take A Chance On Me! Should get more recognition. This song is a spiral of love!

One of my favourite albums of all time, but I find this poll impossible as I don't (and can't) view the album in this way. Avalon is very much a complete work to me which is greater than the sum of its parts, and I listen to it more for its soundworld than for its songs.

I always listen to the whole album though. It's my favourite Roxy album.

I burned out on the well known faves on this one. For years my favorite part of the record has been the middle three on side 2 (Take a Chance / To Turn You On / True To Life)--True To Life single edit slays!

True to Life is an awesome song. Mysterious and seductive and sublime. And it set the template for virtually every song Ferry has done since, but it’s better than all of them.

After living with this album for 30+ years and much pondering, I came up with the same three. Really though, The Main Thing, Take A Chance On Me, True To Life, The Space Between,India and Tara (a kissing cousin to the Love Theme from Blade Runner) are all beautiful, atmospheric creations that still sound fabulous three decades later. And this was my favorite album of 1982. It's a crime that it didn't even crack the Top 50 in the US but don't even get me started on chart performances. Oh and while we're doling out praise, a big shout out to Yanick Etienne for her supremely gorgeous vocal contributions.

I don't know how they managed to make such a gorgeous sounding record in 1982. Aside from the great songs and 'concept' and musicanship, it's really one of the best sounding albums I've heard.

It's really difficult to pick three songs. Every song on the record is a masterpiece.

  19. I prefer the single mix of “Avalon” to the album mix. The backing vocals work better there for me.

It's definitely one of those albums that I hold up as some kind of gold standard of production that very few seem to reach, one of the many reasons that it'll always be a very treasured record for me.

    Great topic!

    I am pondering.

Don’t forget he is on tour this summer, and rumor is he will be playing a complete Avalon!

Aug 31 in Bay Area, CA at the beautiful Fox Theatre, I think.

  23. Rhett Davies did a great job as producer and Bob Clearmountain as mixing engineer. Add in seductive songs and you have a winner.

Since Roxy have a lot of "2"s in their career - 1972 first album, 1982 the last one - I'm still hoping that the true "fine way to end a great career" will be a final farewell tour in 2022. Probably without Brian E. but that wouldn't bother me too much. They really should do this. And open shows with "Prairie Rose"! As two finger salute to one Mick J!

A truly exceptional album, one of the very few I actually wore out when I had it on vinyl. The CD still gets many, many spins... Always Unknowing, a b-side from the album sessions, is also essential listening for me. I have made a custom playlist where it appears between sides 1 and 2.
