Thank you, Mr. RVG. Jazz owes you an enormous debt. Roll the tapes...

My appreciation of jazz increased exponentially after I learned his name. If I see VAN GELDER in the dead wax, it's a done deal. So long, Rudy!

  9. Did not know, thanks! Chamber-music? Or any symphonic stuff? - i.e. with a full size orchestra?

I'm not familiar enough with classical to comment with authority, but I have seen some '50s Vox LPs with RVG in the deadwax.

    Oh my gosh...what a drag !

Over the last 3 years say...I've acquired too many RVG recordings to list. Those old 'living room' jazz sessions just can't be beat !

RIP. I'm fairly certain that 90% of the CDs I bought in the late 1990s and early 2000s as my first, tentative steps into the world of jazz were his editions.

No. So much of the jazz I love was recorded by him.

When a jazz series has your name on it along with Miles, Coltrane and Monk, you know you hit it big

As a self-made man, taking on the recording studio giants of New York City single-handedly in the 1950s in David-versus-Goliath fashion and showing them they had a thing or two to learn about recording from a Hackensack optometrist, Rudy Van Gelder stands to inspire us all as someone who grabbed life by the horns and lived it exactly the way he wanted to live it. He will never be forgotten.

This is the only footage I know of of Van Gelder at work in his heyday (clips with Van Gelder last about three minutes and start around 1:20:00):
