I learned a lot about jazz listening to those RVG editions. Thanks for everything Rudy!

You simply can't fail to be inspired by his story. To go from his humble studio roots to the pinnacle of the artform, working with the greatest players of the 20th Century, and leaving an unbelievable trove of music for future generations to enjoy. Just think of how much of his work we all own! Godspeed, Mr. Van Gelder. And thank you for the music!

That was on one of the takes of either Bag's Groove or The Man I Love wasn't it ? I know it was an argument with Thelonious Monk. hahaaa !!! Good thing they didn't come to blows. I know Miles boxed a bag for exercise...but Monk would've conked him !!

Went to Waterloo Records in Austin and purchased Oliver Nelson's "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" after hearing the news. A vast majority of my Jazz Collection was recorded by Rudy, what a great, productive, long life he led in the Jazz World. RIP and thanks for all the great recordings!

    What a great album ! And a Rudy too-t toot ! :D

So that one was recorded in his Englewood Cliffs studio as he moved there from that living room in Hackensack in 1959 I believe.

Oh something else....I read a quote saying if he'd had a digital recorder back in the 50s..he's have used that as he considered it superior to analog recording. Isn't that weird ?

He's actually on record (NPI) as preferring everything about digital recording and playback technology--"the LP is the greatest distorter", in his own words. Also, (paraphrasing): "What digital technology do you wish you had when you started recording?" "All of it." I don't wanna start an analog vs digital argument in here but I find this very interesting.

Quoting myself here, from a different thread from almost 2 years ago. Wouldn't it be great if someone would write a book about him? @2xUeL maybe?

  20. 'The Man I Love' (take one). It's a funny exchange, though there were tensions, no-one got hurt. For me it always seemed like a private war of wills between Miles and Monk. Miles had his 'cool' to preserve and Monk was the kind who didn't give a furk and was as stubborn as a mule. He plays that amazing solo on both takes where he stretches the motif over double the number of bars. Miles grows impatient and gives him a blast to get him back with the time. Whatever, it's two superlative players jousting away determined not to give an inch, and making wonderful music. Now that Rudy's gone it has an added touch of poignancy.
