Fantastic collection of Eddie Cochran pictures. Here's two I borrowed from that site. Eddie at Wembley Stadium in 1960. I wonder if John Fogerty got the leather slacks idea from these pictures. I even see something similar in John's poses. These shots look pretty modern for 1960. More like 1965.

That's actually a tanpura not a sitar. Tanpura is the non-fretted, drone instrument used in Indian classical music. In fact, that appears to be the same one I have- a six string, two tuning pegs on top, two on one side, two on the other.

They're Otari MTR-90s. Nice machines. They have a long crossfade for some reason which makes punching in very easy.

Fours Seasons - I'm not sure what studio this is, but it looks to be around 1967-1968, so it's probably not Stea-Phillips.

I can't believe all the smoking going on in these pictures. That crap gunks up mic diaphragms (not to mention your lungs :) ). I'd kill anyone of they smoked around my mics. A different era I guess.

    :agree:

And that is just the mics. I can't tell you how much crap I've cleaned out of consoles. The worst offenders always seemed to be tobacco and sodas.

Yeah, but all that smoke is part of what makes those moody old jazz photos so, well, moody. :D We're living in a less 'moody' era I guess. But I agree with you, it's much cooler to see in vintage photos than having to breath it. Blech!

I wish I could've worked at Abbey Road during the 60s but after reading Geoff Emerick's book I don't think I could've done it. He mentioned cigarette smoke permeated the place.

The fellow with the shaggy silvery hair is none other than the Modfather himself, Paul Weller, a major-league Beatles fan in his own right.

  21. fred, what Bowie records were made there?

  22. The funny thing is, I look at the top photo of the big room and
I hear in my head how the piano sounds on "Take Five", and
it all makes sense. You can actually see why that record sounds
that way just looking at the size and shape of the space.

Not fred, but according to Wiki, it was Tonight.

There's a list of which artists recorded which albums here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Studio

I feel the same way now. After reading this thread and Steve's post I just had to hear it again, so last night I played my SACD version nice and loud a couple of times. The sound of the room is as much a part of that recording as the music is. Simply beautiful.
