It looked like screen shots from an hour-long programme on the history of Abbey Road Studios. They actually had footage of The Hollies recording 'On a carousel', Cilla Black recording 'Alfie', and much more.

It's from a video shot for the recording of "On a Carousel." The more common footage has them just doing the song but it's actually a long piece that shows them doing the backing track and seperate vocal sessions. Wish I had the whole thing but it's very rare.

    EDIT: more accurate answer above!

By the way I heard that George Martin shot the Hollies footage but I don't know if that's true. It's very choppy.

The video I referred to even had a brief bit of footage from November 1931 when Sir Edward Elgar conducted 'Pomp and circumstance' (as it's commonly known) at the inaugural recording session. Part of his instructions to the orchestra was 'Please play this tune as though you've never heard it before.'.

Here are a couple of shots of Le Studio in Quebec, Canada.
Sadly, it's been sold off and is now being turned into a spa. :shake:

Rush (and many other bands) recorded several albums there, including Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals. They can be seen there in their video for "Limelight".

Awesome! I was going to ask if there were any more pics from CCR sessions.

    Thanks for that!

Capitol Records seems to have been pretty well documented when it comes to photography in the studios - were other labels less friendly to documenting sessions?

... as well as Police, Bowie and many others.
The McGarrigle Sisters (mom and aunt of Rufus Wainwright) still live nearby.

Two more of Carpenters in the studio. The first one is the group doing an early version of "Close To You". The second is of Karen and Richard singing the background harmonies on "Hurting Each Other." Both of these are taken from footage in the DVD CLOSE TO YOU: REMEMBERING THE CARPENTERS.

Talk about a cold and clinical-looking place! I don't think I could get comfy and rock out in a hospital room. :D

Funny to see hippies out of their element and in such sterile surroundings like this. :) Bet it also seemed strange for some of the engineers and other workers at the studios at the time to be hosting such a different flavour of artist. Mrs. Mills and Mel Tormé they are not!
