Yes, and both were based on books by Stephen Ambrose. SPR D-Day section was based on or inspired by Ambrose's book "D-Day."

I think the grim realism is what is preventing you from appreciating it. IMHO, it is one of the most powerful and realistic battle sequences ever filmed. The only part of the sequence that brings the viewer back is when the Hank’s character is rattled and the sound is partially muted.

I’ve watched the opening to SPR many more times than I have the entire film.
