Jaws still freaks me the heck out after all of these years. I have a great fear of sharks even though I don't live anywhere near the ocean. When Quint is getting chomped on I still find myself kicking at the floor when watching the movie.
Read the book first, so the film was a bit of an anticlimax. But.. the movies opening 20 mins, hell yeah.
Oh, I’m old alright (53) and have been scared by movies. “Jaws” and “The Exorcist” are two that scared me. But they don’t anymore. Nothing, movie wise, does. I guess I’m just jaded.
I will nominate The Innocents (Jack Clayton, 1961). Horror is not my favourite genre, and I’m turned off by gore. I much prefer the psychological stuff. Personal favourites include Don’t Look Now, The Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General.
Every week for 5 years I asked about 40 adults what movie scared them the most. The biggest results were: It (1990) The Exorcist Nightmare on Elm Street Child's Play
When i was a young kid seeing the original "House On Haunted Hill" with Vincent Price at the theater, was very scary, not so much now. My best friend and i walked up to our small little local theater,i can still remember walking home to. I think this for me is one of the best scariest/horror i have seen in awhile. The perfect movie to watch late at night.Just read the reviews on Amazon and see that many agree how good it is. The Autopsy 0f Jane Doe..from 2016 If you like zombie movies this one is also great and you don't mind subtitles Train To Busan..also from 2016 YouTube
This movie, like Audition, starts out more like a drama, definitely not a horror movie to start. So it kind of lulls you into feeling more comfortable. Then it descends into a pretty nightmarish scenario. I enjoy the supernatural films and find some scary enough, but the ones that affect me the most and stay longer with me are the ones grounded very much in reality. So Wolf Creek, The Strangers, and those where you just have a crazy villain, not one that’s supernatural or won’t die even though they should. It just takes one psychopath to ruin a perfectly fine life.
Is that thumbs up for the movie or the Jane Doe character/actress? she sure had lots of people interested in who she actually was.
I do like Japanese horror. Again, not the gory stuff. Classical ghost stories like Kwaidan, Kuroneko, Onibaba. Also, turn-of-the-century stuff like The Ring and, especially, Dark Water. I am also a fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa: Cure, Creepy, etc.
The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers-1956. Outside of the pods oozing, limited visual effects. It was all acting-Kevin McCarthy kissing Dana Winters-truly disturbing. The rest was where true horror abides-in your head. That is why spooky radio shows are so effective. The Shadow knows. True story-The first time I was this was on a Saturday night TV horror show, early '60s. The next day,all of the townfolk were lining up at the nearby school to receive a dose of the Salk/Sabin vaccine against polio. Administered to the public via sugar cubes, that moment alone was a fearful 1-2 punch. I think we had to take the cubes in three doses and this was the second. The 1978 remake offended me on first viewing, but I have come to terms with it. Denny Zeitlin music-perfect! Now,if only Jeff Goldblum could do one of his Apartments.com ads in character. Maybe a Geico tie-in. Surprising.
Nostalgia always comes into play with this question, since we are more scared at younger age, in part due to a bigger imagination. What scared me most was: Black Sabbath Deliverance Last House on the Left Westworld Eraserhead Phantasm The Children The Fog The Thing Poltergeist The Terminator Pumpkinhead Friday the 13th Part VII Paperhouse It The Resurrected Candyman
