Damn, this was a great show! Much better than ' Saturday Night Live' for me. Been watching some clips of it on You Tube and still laugh out loud at the antics of the cast and crew of this fictitious network. Johnny Larue, Guy Cabellaro, Edith Prickley, Count Floyd, Doctor Tongue..the list goes on and on. There was another Canadian ensemble comedy show on around the same time called ' The Royal Canadian Air Farce' which I watched occasionally but didn't find all that funny..but SCTV was always hilarious.
I have all the SCTV DVDs from Shout Factory. The SCTV gang were right up there w/Monty Python & early SNL. Too bad NBC didn't replace SNL w/SCTV in the early 80s
Brilliant! The most talented ensemble in comedy and it still holds up today. Love their Godfather spoof.
SCTV was my sanity break when I wanted to get away from politics and virus coverage the past 2 years.
I thought Eugene Levy's Bobby Bittman was consistently hilarious, with his abridged retirement from show business -- after being updated by Ben Vereen -- a personal highlight.
Love to get a copy of The Five Neat Guys greatest hits . 'Who Made The Egg Salad Sandwiches' is one of my favourite songs.
The High Q skit is one of funniest skits. It never gets old and Eugene Levy and his facial expressions are priceless.
The thing with SNL is that it was always two or three of whatever cast were the standouts. On SCTV they all stood out.
Shout released about 6 box sets, encompassing the NBC 90 era, as well as one box for the 1980-81 pre NBC era
Started a video store in the early 80s. Called it Videotech. (Did not carry The Godfather TV dinner, however) Got most of the DVD box sets. Yeah, a big fan here.
It was 4 boxed sets + the 3-DVD "early years" you mention. They also did a 1-DVD "Christmas" disc but it just included episodes already found on the boxes...
SCTV was late to the party, TV show box set-wise, due to the extensive and expensive licensing necessary to put them out. And I think the TV show complete seasons sales train was already leaving the station by the time the DVDs were released. Apparently the original show never cleared anything, much less for future use, on the assumption so few people were paying attention anyway !
