I placed an order with Secondspin earlier this week - hey it was 20% off and free shipping.
So, today I get the shipping E-mail. At the bottom of the E-mail is a list of items they'd buy from you (stuff you've previously purchased from Secondspin) in that list were 2 Wii game discs that I'd bought for my kids years ago - they are offering $3.75 each. Secondspin got out of the used game market over a year ago- they liquidated their entire inventory. Either they're getting back in or their computer ststem is total fried....

I had a good experience recently. Not a regular place I've ordered from, but I took advantage of one of their free shipping coupons recently, and only because they had the specific album I wanted (Elvis Costello-My Aim is True (Deluxe 2 Disc Edition) by Hip-O Records) at the lowest price. That edition seems to be hard to find online New at a sane price, or at a decent price Used.

So I added a couple other albums I've been meaning to get to the order (John Lennon-Imagine (Ultimate 2 Disc) & Cat Power - Sun). Their selection of albums is hit or miss, it took me a while to find more albums (that I wanted) to add to my cart. I was surprised they actually had the Costello edition I wanted in the first place. Shipping was very good. I didn't like they didn't offer shipment tracking though, and shipping isn't free usually. The discs were in VG - near mint condition. Cases were all digipaks, and in VG condition, with some scuffs/dings that were expected.

Hmmm, well crap. Not what I wanted to see considering I just placed my first ever order with them a few days ago. I was able to track down some OOP discs there for pretty cheap. Hoping they don't come to me in pieces, scratched beyond recognition or missing booklets/art. Any idea where they ship from? I wasn't sure if they ship from one warehouse or multiple locations.

Secondspin ship from a central location in Kentucky.

I've only used these guys a few times, but chances are the jewel cases will not be in the best condition, but inserts should be there. The discs might have some surface scuffs that don't affect play, they might be almost new or somewhere in between. I've ordered from other budget sellers like this (I've used Decluttr the most) before and really never had any bad discs (that skip), but the jewel cases can look like crap.

If they're no worse than Decluttr, I can live with that. I don't mind damaged jewel cases since I always replace used ones with new ones anyway. Crossing my fingers for a hassle-free transaction.

Terrible news, if that's the case. I can't see how it wouldn't be. :(

I will say, though, that a lot of their prices for OOP items haven't been the greatest for a number of years.

You do, however, find a good deal now and then, and I've always found their customer service to be excellent.

I'll miss the excitement of checking my personal favourites and having something pop up.

No where from what I have experienced over the last two to three years unless you want to practically give them away. The only exceptions seem to be DCC Gold CD's, Audio Fidelity SACD and Gold discs, MFSL SACD and Gold discs and even their value has gone down considerably.

Yeah, I was mostly kidding. I figured you were aware of the classifieds.

As for decluttr, I don't know. I'm almost exclusively on the buying end of used media.

I hear you. Unfortunately for a lot of CDs you’re lucky if you can even get a dollar for them. Not worth it to try and sell them here. I could package a bunch of them and sell them to Second Spin and at least get a few dollars for them. That’s gone now. May look at decluttr

I also used them for unloading stuff that wasn't worth selling. They actually gave a little bit more than Decluttr but I guess I'll be using them from now on.

When I compare prices I've been finding that Decluttr has become way more selective than they used to be (they used to pay you for pretty much anything). Lately, it seems like each time I scan something I get more and more error messages about titles they can't accept.

Put in what could be my last order this morning. They are being sucked dry. About a third of my want list was gone, maybe half. Picked up nine discs for under $40 with tax and shipping. Not as good as I've done in the past, but got a couple of surprises.

I placed an order on February 25th I got a shipping notification today March 8th.
In the past that has been a two to three day delay it is now 11 days.
Considering that none of their staff is processing incoming stock - they aren't buying anymore, that tells me that they've either laid off most of their help or the staff have quit. Either way, the end is near.

Confirmation of their closing was posted on Facebook, today.

FYE will continue, apparently, which really doesn't help things, IMHO.

I will miss this store. I was with them for many years, back when there was also Wherehouse.com (my original go-to store), and at some point I switched to using their sister site SecondSpin.com. I recall comparing stocks on both sites, which were the same as far as I could tell (same parent company after all). I never could find any rare titles at first; my wish list was always nearly empty. Then one sleepless night I was browsing online and I discovered that they updated their stocks very early in the morning (I was located on the west coast so the time may have been more reasonable for easterners) and that was how I began to score many awesome OOP discs over the years. All those customers still sleeping missed out (I used to be one of them), because they really had some gems sometimes. And the trick was to hit refresh before 90 minutes were up and your cart was retained. I would often do this while taking time to look up values of certain discs for resale or just comparing prices to Amazon, judging if I needed to buy it ASAP or not. If I knew I couldnt buy that day, I would keep refreshing the cart every 90 minutes all day (Yes I had a job, this timed refreshing technique was an acquired skill and only took a second to do). Obviously I needed to sleep at night, so one last refresh before bed and then I made sure I got up early the next morning to re-add the titles that auto-dumped during the night. I only waited a second day like this before ordering if I knew of an upcoming sale (from an email alert) or if I was awaiting a payday. I often competed with other early risers and missed out on ones I had in my cart the day before, its a chance you take when you need to sleep. Most were for my personal collection, but I did re-sell sometimes to fund my music addiction. I think I mainly bought "Just One Lefts" or Collectibles most of the time, only if cheaper than Amazon or really rare and valuable discs. Sure, there were times I would get incorrect titles or really beat up discs, which was especially disappointing if the disc was ultra-rare. I spent a big amount on a rare Iron Maiden box set, but it only had the CDs but no scroll or shot glass, therefore incomplete -bummer. But like others said, customer service was pretty good, they always refunded me in store credit when I had a problem. Sometimes they wanted the disc back, but mostly not, so no hassle. There was some fun involved in ordering too. It was always exciting to get an unexpected first run Japanese pressing, still in the original smooth-edged jewel case (sometimes their errors in barcode tracking were in your favor).
I was away for many years for financial reasons, and then I eventually just forgot about them. But I actually thought about them again this year (I think a side-scrolling ad popped up on a webpage). I got a few orders in for my personal collection during the 50/60% off sale. I still had $25 in store credit that had been sitting there for 7 years! I was surprised how many gems were left during this sale, and it helped to look early in the morning again like the old days. There were a few rare titles I had in my cart at say 4am, then changed my mind because I already had them. But I watched them on my list, and they often disappeared quickly to other buyers when 7am on the West coast rolled around. They definitely updated their stock at least once during the sale, as my wishlist that had been empty the day before, was replenished with a handful of titles (and lots of box sets) one day during my early morning check. Still waiting the media mail shipment of this last order, 27 titles (56 discs total) including a Super Deluxe box set, a few multidisc boxes, and others all at 60% off with only $4 shipping for the lot. Crossing my fingers for no errors, as there wont be any returns or store credit this time no doubt. Goodbye Second Spin, you will be missed!
