After 16 years, my old TV finally bit the dust and we bought a new one -- a 24" Toshiba. We don't have it hooked into a home theater setup, but I've been fiddling with the controls tonight. Do any of you have any advice or rituals you go through when breaking in and adjusting the picture on a new set? Thanks -

I recommend buying Digital Video Essentials.

This will give you filters and show you how to properly adjust contrast, brightness, color and tint. First thing you should do today is turn down the contrast. It likely comes out of the box blasted all the way up. This is bad for the tube and it distorts the image. Turn it down as low as you can stand it for now, probably below 1/2 way. It will seem dim at first, but you are avoiding problems down the road and extending the life of your TV.

Check the menu for the video adjustment choices. They will often have things like Std., Movie, Sports, etc. Choose standard or movie. If it has a color temperature selection set it for NTSC.
