I wanna side with Jonesy on this simply because his shower stall crooning sessions on Facebook are one of the highlights of my week.

It's true that the band wouldn't have got far without those killer songs but I'm sure John and Steve contributed plenty to all that. They also wouldn't have become what they did without the presence and visceral magnetisme of Johnny Rotten, who was the focal point of the entire mouvement. Jones was absolutely fantastic on guitar and without that bite and punch, they might not have had the same impact. Credit must go to the powerful, tight drumming of Paul Cook too. The whole thing was a band effort/phenomenon.

exactly this. one of the best examples of 'the sum greater than the parts' in the same way as the beatles, the clash and so many more.

The PiL records are very good, so ascribing the classic status to NMTB to Glen is being very, very generous. That band needed four very good musicians, and until Glen left, it had them.

The Pistols have a vote on each. But why are we acting surprised that John doesn't want his songs in a TV show based on a book where he is called "an annoying little brat" and a "total dick"?

I always understood that Steve did all of the guitars and any bass that wasn't Glenn - Sid was a total wipe out.

    1) without Lydon this thread, plus thousands of bands throughout the world, wouldn't exist and many other bands would sound very different. The only member who is irreplaceable.

    2) Lydon is the only member to go on and make records that were as good or even better than the Pistols.

I didn't know that. I seem, however, to remember a video on the making of the NMTBHTSP LP in which Steve both plays back tape and - I think I remember this part - demonstrates some of his technique on guitar. Of course, I suppose seeing him doing selective bits doesn't prove he did the whole lot. Do you have any more details on the 'other studio musician' theory?

the "other guitarist" conspiracy theory (usually suggesting Chris Spedding as being the actual player) has been disproven numerous times, and is--dare I say it--bollocks.

you think it was just made up for no reason, you know like all the other bands where people actually have the name of a possible actual lead guitarist brought into the studio?

Don't forget Chris Thomas. In comparison, the Goodman versions lack most of the power and bite of the real stuff. Didn't Goodman produce I Wanna Be Me? I rest my case.
