Cher is more of a celebrity than a singer, although she has made many records. Myself and David Letterman say no.
Again, how funny how much different generations see them. There's no doubt Sonny Bono was a very crucial figure in her career, and "I Got You Babe" stands as an all time classic record, but most of us who came up in a post-Sonny And Cher world view her as a singular icon who just also once happened to be in a duo with her ex-husband that she had a few hits with, kind of like Tina.
The HOF is a joke, so I don't lend any credence to the artists that are voted in. Not because they aren't without merit but the HOF is..well... I'm not sure what it is but to me it's not about the artistry of RnR. So, there are many who should be but it's not based on thoughtful consideration, it's again about well...IDK.
I was a kid when she was making music. I’m an old man now and she’s still performing and making music. She’s done her time, and she’s made a huge contribution to music, whether one likes her or not. Yes, she should be in the RNRHOF, without question.
Madonna is in the HOF. ABBA is in the HOF. Cher sang backup for Phil Spector and covered the same rock songs with The Byrds and Paul Revere And The Raiders... who were her peers. She deserves to be in.
Yes but again her career has lasted so long without him and she arguably hit bigger heights without him that her solo career arguably eclipses the work with Sonny besides I Got You Babe and The Beat Goes On to most folk who grew up in a post Sonny And Cher world, just like most of us associate Tina's post Ike career outside of a few songs with him. Her solo career merits the hall as much as Sonny And Cher does. Perhaps the Tina analogy may not be the best given what we know about Ike Turner, maybe solo Michael Jackson next to Jackson Five is a better one given they broke him out but he soared as a soloist
Again, though, Cher doesn't sing without Sonny so without him, there is no such thing as a post-Sonny Cher - at least not from a singing perspective. Ed
Sure, why not. If some of the other artists, who are far removed from rock and roll, can get in, go for it. Y’know, the RNRHOF is a bit of joke, right? If it means a lot to people, I say go for it.
Of course Cher should be in the HOF, with or without Sonny. Seriously underrated as a singer, she’s been a victim of her own success on television and film and massively overexposed as a result. Time allows for perspective and the perspective is that although her catalogue is uneven, her greatest hits package could now run to a 4 cd box set with no filler. It’s only since the glare around both Madonna and Cher has faded that we can begin to see that Cher is the more important artist of the two. That’s despite her never having made a single album as consistent as “Bedtime Stories”. It’s not just about albums. In 100 years Cher will be seen as one of the key figures of the 6os, 70s and 80s who had her biggest hit in 1998. And her best songs will be listened to as long as people listen to music.
As a recording artist she made a bigger impact than people like Darlene Love, who is in the Hall for mainly being a studio singer on other people's records. Cher had major hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s.
