Well, she hung around Gregg Allman and Gene Simmons, both in. I say yes. Some of the people they have let in, why stop now.
Cher definately should be included for her extensive body of work that goes all the way back to the 60s. I suppose that most people think of songs like "Half Breed" or ""Believe", but they tend to forget the rock songs she did in the late 80s and 90s. My favorite is "Love And Understanding" True, I did say that she doesn't really write, arrange, or play an instrument, but neither did people like Barbra Streisand.
You Got Me Babe? The Hall of Fame is also for artists that represented and influenced the R&R culture and industry so yes.
This Thread should have included a poll. I would like to see the results on one page rather than count them all out in the six pages here.
No but Sonny and Cher should be.....How influential was `I Got You Babe`?...even that sheepskin jacket and striped pants (Sonny), was influential.
Who is not a R&RHOF inductee. That said, The Supremes, The Ronettes and Darlene Love are in (and deservedly so) for their vocal work only. The biggest argument against letting Cher in is "Believe", for introducing autotune as an effect. That is unforgiveable.
Not a fan myself of Cher, but will say that "Believe" was one hell of a comeback and put an exclamation point on her career. She carried on playing hockey arenas when her peers were forgotten or already working the casino circuit.
No one who doesn't play rock music, or hasn't been highly influential on rock music, should be in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rename it something like the Popular Music Hall of Fame, and we'll talk...
It's amazing that she really hates "Believe", even though it is one of her biggest signature hits. Her reason? She had heated disagreements with the producer of the song.
I notice you said "rock music". It's the "Rock and Roll" HOF. If you don't know the history of the music, you won't understand why this makes the difference.
Cher in RnR HoF? Nope. Maybe in a music hall of fame. This being said, judging by numerous comments here, change the name and people may start to take it serious again...
Cher was a (small) part of many classic rock & roll recordings, and was a high-profile fashion trendsetter and Sunset Strip scenester/icon in L.A. during the mid-to-late 1960s. She deserves to get in sometime...maybe after other, more 'worthy' artists like P.F. Sloan, The Seeds and The Flying Burrito Brothers are inducted.
Just last week I saw the new documentary about American Indian musicians "RUMBLE The Indians Who Rocked The World" (excellent movie btw, I highly recommend it), and they puzzlingly left out Cher completely (also omitted: Jim Pepper, Rita Coolidge). So yes, if there's a hall of fame for Indians, definitely. R&R Hall, I say no way, until scores of more deserving acts who have yet to be honored get in first.
Well, a lot of people answer these questions, based on their own personal tastes. Usually, it's because some fans don't feel "validated" (start with Monkees). It's is possible to separate personal tastes dispassionately in relation to actual criteria. Sales figures actually aren't even mentioned, but influence is given weight. Then these people posting can consider their response more thoughtfully.
Yes. She contributed to many of Phil Spector's recordings, had huge success across the world in every decade since the 60s and made rock records among many other genres. Where's the need to discuss it? They'd be lucky to have her.
