Much better than the ugly US cover (though it wouldn't make sense here, since it depicts the Japanese "Polka Party" and the non-US compilation "Eat It").

I've seen an album at Half Price Books that looks VERY similar to "Dark Side"... the prism is heart-shaped. Can't remember the artist, though.

Yes, but the theme of this thread is not directed at parodies or obvious tributes, but rather covers that are similar for some unknown reason or serpendipity.

Not to derail the thread too much, but thank you for posting these two alternate Al covers, especially side-by-side with the source material. I'd never seen them before! As for your question, I can't say I like the JB parody cover more than the actual cover (posted below for those unfamiliar), though neither is particularly stunning. I know the album sold poorly and people consider the title/cover a liability, but I wonder if there was just some Weird Al burnout setting in at that point? Unless Peter and the Wolf had already come out, I don't think people expected anything other than Al's standard routine, no matter what the cover was. Too bad, some of his strongest original material is on this album!

Always thought Rafaelson/Kirschner knew what they were doing.

Is the Shearwater one a homage, a ripoff, or a simple coincidence? Of course there are differences, and they both really owe their design to one of Rene Magritte's The Lovers paintings:

It wasn't an obvious tribute. Just some obscure artist whose album resembled DSOTM.

  17. And again in turn, the design is broadly similar to the new album by Real Estate:

My buddy Rick is one of the drummers in Les Batteries and when he gave me a copy of the above CD I compared it to the one below.
