RTRC is commercial suicide compared to Life In A Day . The were massively disappointed with how the first album turned out and took a sharp turn into mad darkness. It's like a jagged and nervous, crazier precursor to Empires And Dance. And you get to hear Derek Forbes imitating a chimp on "Veldt", by far the weirdest thing they ever released.
Another great sounding album and a real bang for the bucks is "40 The Best Of Simple Minds 1979-2019" I have the 3-CD format and I love it all the way from 1 to 40 sounds phenomenal. This was my revenge on the big music album that I bought when it first came out. This is a winner album. Note: "3-CD format contains 40 songs. While the 2-Vinyl is 18 songs. and another one is 1-CD format of vinyl on cd version is 18 songs!!! Please double check for different album variation if there's any." 30 SEP, 2019 40: THE BEST OF 1979 – 2019 – ALBUM OUT NOW! in Featured, Release Info Share Out Now! Thanks...to me Life in a Day sounds like a band who likes Roxy Music and Japan a lot, but is not yet as good as either one of them. Kind of unoriginal.
Add a Magazine influence. Jim and Charlie agree with you. The second album was the start of the real band, the first one was the two of them writing for a band.
Thanks to postpunkmonk for alerting me to this book: Want List: Graeme Thomson Gives Simple Minds Their Due with “Themes For Great Cities: A New History Of Simple Minds” Book Looking forward to it when it comes out. later -1

I'm totally confused with this thread @Classic Car Guy . Where are we at? Posts are referencing so many recordings. I am in the group that bows out at NGD. Are we doing song by song from the beginning as I would love that...
I've requested to have the discussion about Act of Love moved to Simple Minds "new" single: Act Of Love Hopefully that will happen. I should have started a thread myself.
Reading it this week and really impressed with the level of background and input from the original band members - especially Derek Forbes and Mick MacNeill. Superbly written and has made me go back through the X5 boxset song by song and enjoy some serious headphone listening pleasure!! Highly recommended biography - just note it is ONLY covering the earlier part of their career and doesn't try to get into the 90s and beyond (which is a bonus as far as I'm concerned!) Although I should clarify that I love Black & White 050505 through Walk Between Worlds, their return for this period has been such a treat. As was the exemplary 5X5 Live tour and Box Set - my favourite live album of all time!
I finished reading my copy last night. An excellent read. A really good deep dive into the 1977-1985 part of the bands career. Some great stories from Mick, Derek, Jim, Charlie and former manager Bruce Findlay. Derek goes into great detail as to why he was sacked in 1985, and is quite pragmatic about it. While it would be interesting (for me anyway) to read about how the wheels came off in the 1990's, I agree with the author covering the first 10 years in the main. Maybe if Jim ever gets his book finished he'll cover that later period in more detail. One thing I found interesting in the book was hidden away at the back, in the credits. The author lists where and when he interviewed the main players for the book, and Brian McGee is mentioned. Brian later asked for all his quotes to be removed from the book before publication. Now, I'm a friend of a friend with Brian so I made a few queries as to why this was the case. It seems that after sleeping on it, Brian changed his mind about being in the book as he felt his comments could upset a few people and perhaps open a few old wounds.
When the earlier book changed its name from "Book of Brilliant Things" to "the Heart of the Crowd" that's when I knew that Jim Kerr had taken that title for his auto bio. It'll come out eventually. I certainly hope that it will chart not only the glory years, but also the stadium years and the decline and renewal that followed. From 2002 onward their hand-over-hand move back to artistic relevance has been a stately, but rewarding process. Since 1996, I have said that they have made their best album since "Sparkle In the Rain" six times. Seven if you count the Lostboy album.
This implies that all of his quotes could be construed as negative. That's a shame, but it was his call. I'd have loved to heard his take on things as he was the first man to leave the band and he was in the engine room for my favorite Simple Minds albums. There's not a lot of Brian McGee interviews out there.
That's a large collection especially the singles.. You gotta get one of these especially the LP version. I have the tape, CD but the LP sounds phenomenal. In my opinion this is the pinnacle of Jim's vocal. I love all the versions he made here especially Ghost Dancing and Alive and Kicking. Pretty much the whole album. @Post-Punk Monk didn't really like the captivation of the recording as he reviewed it. Its very hard to capture a 10/10 especially on live music not like some of the late 80's Phil Collins was done very well. However there is a very big difference in the sound of the LP especially when I transferred it into reel to reel using my home studio. The sound is more magical....
Most of Brian's statements about the band since the late 80s have been fairly negative and bitter, apparently the wounds still haven't healed, despite the fact that leaving the band was his own decision. Derek, who was properly sacked, is not bitter. Maybe it's just his more gung-ho personality. He's of course maintained some kind of relationship with the band and popped up now and then. He overdubbed bass on Someone Somewhere and Promised You A Miracle on Live In The City of Light, guested with the band on a couple of 1987 gigs. Was asked to re-join the band in 1989 but declined. Was in the band again in 1996-1999. Played on a few tracks on Black and White - that's him on Stay Visible.
Their new album was finished in October of 2020. They'll be halfway through the album after that by now I'd guess. I'd imagine the plan is to get the much cancelled 40 years tour out of the way, then concentrate on the new record then. The tour finishes in August, so I'd expect rumblings of a new record sometime after that.
Oh yeah.. I remember they're hitting the road starting fall 2022... That would be good too.. BTW.. Oh man just reminds me of... I cant wait for OMD they're coming over in Portland and we got tickets for the show. Anyways.. Looking forward to the new Simple Minds album and hopefully they'll record something in analog LP...
