I should add to this that Rex was also by some point a mixing engineer. At least for mixes done afterwards from a multitrack.

Good catch, Jordan! Two bassists: Edward Gilbert and Joe Comfort.

The reference to 'Bass' behind the strings could mean orchestral bass or the low end of the strings
ie: cellos and basses, just a thought as I can't imagine a rhythm section being happy with the rhythm
bass being so far away from the drums.

Does anyone have an idea on how well the N17#3 1S, and N18 U.S. mono cuts sound for OTL? I know that the D matrices are ideal, however, I have found a wonderful looking (both cover and disk) NM copy of the record.

It's probably pretty good. (It will be markedly more compressed than the MFSL mono reissue of a few years ago, but some people are not bothered by the compression, and the Capitol compression of the day was typically pretty "ear friendly," unlike the more modern varieties.)

marmil It's such a long story...

Just got the MoFi LP of OTL. Wow! What an amazing-sounding hunk o' vinyl. The bass on Blues in the Night is worth the price of admission. NOT a record to play if you're even a bit depressed. But the whole thing is the aural equivalent of being wrapped in pink cotton wool.

Wasn't there a 12 inch single in the early 80s that had the original stereo mix of One for my Baby on it? I seem to remember reading this somewhere but I can't find it anywhere! Hopefully someone in forum land knows of what I am speaking of....

I was very surprised to find this in a shop today:

That's an early stereo copy -- still using the original label design, so no later than, what...1959??? -- and it's already on lacquer D29! (Sorry, @paulmock -- I did not buy the album. Just took a photo.)

I'm very proud of you. That must have been very difficult to leave in the store.

—> Amazon UK is listing new boxes available from three marketplace sellers, but it will cost you: £525, £549, and £2000 (plus shipping).
    :bigeek:
The booklet is no big loss.

Do the '87 and '98 Capitol CDs contain different masterings?

    Is one better?

Yes, they do. The 1987 US Sinatra Capitol CDs were mastered by Larry Walsh and the 1998 (US) CDs by Bob Norberg. Although there are many, many threads that go into the specifics for each album, the general and overwhelming consensus is that the 1987 masterings are far superior, due to not being overly no-noised and processed.

I guess I lucked out on Ebay then because not knowing any better, I thought I was ordering a 1998 copy and was sent a 1987, which indeed does say Larry Walsh. Thanks!

You did indeed. I forgot to mention that Walsh's stereo versions are remixes, and are generally pretty good and sympathetic to the material. His Where Are You and Come Fly With Me remixes are practically definitive.
