What's with that running order for SW 1053? 3-track masters maybe? And the sequence changed for the stereo LP, and they only bothered to re-splice the stereo master?

I had forgotten I own the silver box MFSL Only the Lonely. Yeah, it’s been a while since I listened to a lot of my Sinatra albums. I’m forgetting what I have. Tossing what I shouldn’t. Etc.

If I recall, my copy of the MFSL was riddled with surface noise. I might give it another thorough cleaning and use the “Magic” function on my Parks Audio Puffin. That function truly is magic.

I just listened to my silver MFSL Only the Lonely for the first time in a few years. I haven’t heard this since I upgraded my turntable and cartridge. Holy crap. This album sounds great! My copy has some surface noise, but nothing terrible.

It is a nice sounding LP.

Congrats on getting better sound with the upgrade - always good to hear your sound improve after changing something.

Yep, I should have pointed out that, as Jordan says, that is long time Capitol engineer Carson Taylor next to the microphone stand behind Frank.

For those keeping score, that's at least three Capitol engineers known to have been present for at least some of the OTL sessions: Taylor, Val Valentin, and Rex Uptegraft.

Thanks for sharing these, Matt! Every time I hear this album it mystifies me, so it's good to see some visuals of the atmosphere in the recording studio.

I see that the harp case above was addressed to the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, which was featured in Hitchcock's famous film, VERTIGO, also in 1958, having its world premiere three weeks prior to this recording session. I wonder if Ms. David knew Gavin or Madeleine Elster.....

(Upon release, Vertigo was kind of a box office dud, not the revered film it is today.)

I'm sure somebody else knows for certain, but this looks more to me like one of the shots from Monte Carlo in 1958.

Yeah, it looks a little off. Same suit and hat. Maybe taken outdoors?

Can anyone help me identify a newly acquired stereo pressing of this album?

Scranton anvil and "&" on both sides.
    Catalog number SW1053.
N13#2 side 1, N16 side 2, label has Capitol logo on the left with the arrow behind it as seen on this one:
But like I said, it's Stereo. US Scranton stereo.

Any ideas on what timespan it is from?

Ballpark, '60-'61? Cut from dub tapes in NYC, not from the true masters in Los Angeles. That appears to be mono cut. In the matrix, is it SW-1053, or W-1053? W = mono. The label indicates mono.

The picture isn't the exact label mine has, just the same design. SW-1053.
    Thank you.

You are welcome! By the way, the fact that it's cut from a dub tape doesn't mean that it won't sound good.

On the other hand, as with all stereo pressings of that era, it is missing two songs.

Yeah, I didn't realize it was missing any tracks until I came home and searched the forum. Sounds pretty decent to me for sure!
Gotta keep my eyes peeled for an original mono...
