Sinatra's "Popping P's": Why aren't they corrected or softened?

Regarding the John Bryson (Corbis) photo that Bob F posted a few posts back, our cohort Wave shared the story behind that here:

Check the TV specials if you're really interested. he uses a mike that looks a lot like that one on the '65 A Man And His Music special. Though that would have to be a rehearsal pic or something, if that's where it's from.

That pic in question is at a prison he visited with Basie and the Band for an outdoor daytime concert. A segment of it is shown on "An American Legend" the CBS 65 documentary with Cronkite.

Little known trivia: After Sinatra's set, Johnny Cash came on and did "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues" with the Basie Band. That cat could SWING!

Frank did time. Cash did time and cocaine. Cash wins with that crowd.

MLutthans left out the part where Cash (in an amphetimene haze) lept up on Bill Basie's piano and started doing the Tennessee two-step on the keys. Security had to hustle him out of there to avert a riot.

Good catch, Paul. From Jet Magazine, July 29, 1965:

Thanks for the comments. It was the jacket that gave it away. One of the few times I have seen Mr. S perform wearing a light colored jacket. Plus, the outdoor lighting was also a giveaway to me.;)

Kudos to you, Bob for finding the Jet coverage! BRAVO!

While catching up on my MOJO magazines over the holidays I came across this quote from Elektra founder, Jac Holzman, that might be of interest to folks here:

"Jim [Morrison] wasn't a singer and never thought of himself as one.... But he walked into the studio and saw that iconic microphone, Telefunken U47, which had been on the cover of one of the Frank Sinatra albums, and said, 'That's Frank Sinatra's mike.' He began to make love to it...."

    MOJO 204 (November 2010), p. 89.

I once read Sinatra was Morrison's favorite singer.

I've read that Morrison 'admired' Sinatra.

If you listen to a Doors song like You're Lost Little Girl you may hear faint shades of Sinatra in there.

I was listening to "Wishful Sinful" before reading this post and Sinatra immediately came to mind.

Anybody know which session this picture is from? It appears to be from the Frank-in-a-box Reprise era (recorded at United), but he's using an ELA M 251 mic, and I don't recall seeing other Reprise sessions with that vocal mic, but I may just have a foggy memory.

Is that a flat spot on the mesh, or just an illusion from seeing into it?

Any other pictures from the same session?

It looks like round mesh with side support framing, like in the picture below, which also serves as my way to finally get Lemmy into a Sinatra thread.

I don't know which session this (the Sinatra photo in my earlier post) is from, as it's off a CD cover....one of those, you know, "special" CDs that we don't talk about.

^^^^^If Pat Boone can do a "metal album," I think Lemmy could step up and do a Great American Songbook Sinatra-style recording. I'd pay to hear that!
