Think of any artist that emerged in the LP era, that is before cassette, CD, etc.

Think of what that artist’s first compilation LP was.

Let’s limit this to single LP comps.

Please illuminate me as to what 1st compilation LP is better than this. It doesn’t have to have a die cut whiskey glass shaped cover.

    Otherwise it’s game over.

And that would not be fair.

I agree with the OP. Sing It Again Rod was the first CD I ever purchased.

That’s a damn strong contender. That’s exactly the kind of quality I’m talking about!

How about a track listing and a release date?

Some challengers have entered the field

    Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits
    Byrds - Greatest Hits
    Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits
    Buffalo Springfield - Retospective
Black Sabbath - We Sold Our Souls for Rock n Roll
    Neil Young - Decade
    Queen - Greatest Hits

Off the top of my head. Nothing against Sing it Again Rod but there are some pretty great ‘first conpilations’ out there.

I don’t get the premise because cassettes were introduced in the early 60s. How is this Rod Stewart compilation before cassettes?

I would disqualify this one because the some of the songs are edited and it omits too many tracks I like better than the choices here.

    Single LP’s?

So I think you’re 50% disqualified my friend. But you’re headed in the right direction! You might have done better if you kept the top of your head on.

Sing it again Rod was a must buy to get Pinball Wizard, the sleeve is pretty good too.

You’ve completely lost the plot but thanks anyway :)

Maybe I should have said, “during the era when according to RIAA stats, the LP was the dominant format for the sale of pre-recorded music”?

Agreed. I know the edited versions were the singles, but “Sweet Emotion” without the talk box intro and coda? No, thanks.

Al Greens Greatest Hits was an incredible comp....before and after the track change in 77 or so.

I'm pretty sure this was my first exposure to Rod's music. My older brother had the record and I was fascinated by the packaging, so I listened to it to see what the music was like and obviously the music is amazing....and I became a big fan which I still am today. So yeah, I agree it is pretty great.

I have that LP. I inherited the disc from my grandfather and I was glad to discover that it had Handbags and Gladrags on it, as I had only discovered that song through the British OFFICE.

Sorry, I don't have a better comp to add, just thought I'd chime in. :)

It's tough to beat Dylan Greatest here. Really makes the case for him as a singles act.

Its a cool package indeed! I have one on the red label and one on the skyscraper label. Both are the die-cut and sound OK compared to the album versions. They seem to be compressed a bit to fit this much music on each side. IIRC is is around 25 min. Like I stated is is a cool package, but I rarely if ever listen. If I am in the mood for a Rod comp I choose the best of 1 or 2. These 4 LPs include most everything on the first 4 ,some of the 5th, along with a b-sde or two, and sound fantastic.
