one of my pet peeves when they use a different era photo.....Columbo did it with the Box sets for the 70's show and had the much older Peter Falk on the cover

Many memories of albums I used to have. Though I think I found slipping the plastic sleeve of that Rod Stewart album back into the jacket a tad awkward :)

One slab of vintage vinyl I still have is "15 Everly Hits 15".

It may not have been totally coincidental that S&G Greatest Hits was released on the heels of their one-off reunion in June 1972. Two years after splitting up, the duo still had a huge amount of cache and for that reason, the contemporaneous album jacket photos “worked”.

Sing It Again has an excellent track listing, no question. I don’t own it myself. I can see it would be a fun listen, but it’s no substitute for those essential first four studio albums.

Ok ...sticking to the first, one LP only rule, hits/comp by a single artist I’m going with these. Marvin Gays Super Hits was his third collection, not his first otherwise it would be on my list. Ha... watching the Green Bay vs 49er game and they just played Family Affair ... the only real hit missing from Sly’s GH package. The Rod collection is killer ... but it is lengthy :( as far as sound quality.

    9. Doors -13
    10. Hollies Greatest Hits on Imperial ‘67

Lots of others ... Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison, Elvis, The Beatles Hottest Hits looks awesome ... I basically couldn’t get out of the 60s without going completely nuts.

Have we found a date when the "LP era" began yet? I would think 1967. If so, I'd go with Bob's G/H as being the first since he was already much more than a singles artist anyways.

Sing it Again Rod was released in August of 1973. Sing it Again Rod is probably my favorite Rod
    Stewart release
but the premise of it being before pre-recorded cassette sales is false to begin with.

I have my old vinyl copy Sing It Again Rod from when it was first released, but haven't played it in decades. Great anthology, the pick of his first 4 (and 4 best) albums. But it had cross-fades, which is disqualifying IMO.

So I go with Dylan's Greatest Hits, or Hendrix's Smash Hits, or the Stones' Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass).
