Confirmed by the BBC, not just reporting the Variety story:

Rock legend David Crosby dies aged 81
Veteran US rocker David Crosby has died aged 81, his representative has confirmed.

The signer-songwriter was a founding member of two of the biggest bands of the 1960s: The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

His career saw him achieve the rare feat of being inducted to the revered Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

His wife told showbiz site Variety that he died while surrounded by family.

"His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music," the statement added.

Sad to hear. No one else like him. His voice was golden right up to the end.

So true! I even like these albums better than his solo debut.

    Rest In Power, Mr. Croz.

I'm a Neil fan foremost but I'll always remember DC for Guinnevere. It's one of those songs, like The Band's Whispering Pines, that makes me think, how the hell did he write that?

The Guardian is now reporting it.

Like I said in the other thread, when the Associated Press reports it, you can accept with metaphysical certitude that it's true, because their standards are that before they report a death, they must have multiple levels of confirmation. They're always last on those stories but their deal is they want to be right rather than first.

Sounded like he had at least one more in the bag too! Maybe we'll get a posthumous release to celebrate his amazing career.

The Croz was and is forever cool. Everything he did was gold. So glad I got to see him with Stills and Nash back in 2010. This turning out to be a hard year for losing heroes and we are only a few weeks in..

For me personally, having Van Conner (Screaming Trees) and David Crosby die on back-to-back days (or at least have their deaths announced on consecutive days) is pretty rough, even if Crosby's egotism rubbed me the wrong way at times. At his best, Crosby was a major talent and he wrote or co-wrote a handful of truly great songs in his career, IMO particularly with the Byrds (and to lesser degree with CSN/CSNY).

    RIP David Crosby

I was listening to If I Could Only Remember My Name earlier tonight. An amazing talent and I hope he enjoyed the mad ride that was his life.
