Sir Reg has been one of the hardest working men in showbiz for almost 50 years - even during his years of burnout. He was one of the first British solo 'auters' to break big as a concert act in the US, the first western rock act to play in the USSR, and has had centre stage at one of the biggest TV events ever (Live Aid, Live 8, Princess Di's funeral).

You've earned this retirement sir - enjoy it!

    He didn't even say sorry.

Well, it does seem to be the hardest word...

One of the articles I read said that he had some "health issues." Hope he's okay.

He's saying the final tour will be around 3 years long - firstly, he's 70 and secondly, can his voice take another 3 years of bashing? He just sang two songs and he sounded terrible.

I love the guy and his music but I hope he doesn't die or get sick during his final tour, as happened with Pavarotti, another who went on beyond the point he should have stopped.

It’s less of a ‘big announcement’ when you realise he’s going to be playing live for 3 more years.:)

I agree that constant touring hasn’t done his 70-plus year old voice any favours. If he wants to work I’d rather he concentrate on making albums. Though I don’t suppose that brings the money in anymore...

He's writing a musical and working with Beyonce on updates to the Lion King soundtrack for the upcoming film, so he's likely going to keep it studio-based, but still busy.

Exactly, a 3 year long tour. How many more years touring would he have in him anyway given his advanced age.

Is this the first time he's announced a pending retirement? I seem to recall he's retired from touring before. Honestly the last few times I saw him in concert his vocals were very rough, so I can't be too upset by this news. But I do hope he continues to record new material.

Yeah, he's retired probably 6 times over his career, starting in the late 70s. But I think this is truly real, being how planned it is, and how old he is now.

I think he will retire, but it is just so odd.
He says that his family are his priority now and wants to spend more time with them. His children are aged 5 and 7 yet he is going on a 3 year long world tour. Given that he has toured non stop over the decades......

I agree with you -- given his age, if he wanted to spend time with his children, you'd think he would have just called it quits now...

I often wondered what great studio stuff such a talented guy as Elton could have come up with as he grew older, if not for all the touring. Same with others, like Pete Townshend.

Tina has kept to her retirement, only occasionally appearing in public since her last tour ended in 2009, and I think any of the few appearances she's made did not feature musical performances.

I saw Elton live in February, 2017, and his vocals were just fine. It was a great show.

Had to happen eventually. Hope to catch at least one more time.

Seen him 14 times by now. Always delivers

I can imagine a Slayer cover of "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting".

An Elton cover of "Necrophiliac", not so much.
