Close. That's how they ended the first season. The show runners didn't expect to be renewed for another season, so had to figure out how to work around that when the second season began. They called it "Sledge Hammer! (The Early Years)" and moved on.
I can’t believe that I never heard of this show. It looks like a series that I would have loved back then. Does anyone know what it was on against?
according to Wikipedia it was moved around quite a bit - which I seem to remember since I liked the show and could never find it consistently - until the second season's kiss of death, being put up against the Cosby Show...
Oh man, I loved this show -- essentially it was a goofy, Airplane style parody of ultra-violent Dirty Harry/Hunter/Cobra-esque cop shows/movies, and that style of humor was right up my alley when I was in high school. I even had both issues of the short lived Marvel Comics series! (The show was produced by the TV division of New World Pictures; Marvel was a New World property at the time.) I haven't seen it since it originally aired though, so I have no idea how well (or not) it has aged.
sledge hammer- listen vermin! just because my partner is attractive and has great legs, it doesn't give you the right to harass her. dori doreau- oh thanks sledge. that really helped a lot. sledge hammer- i'm always a gentleman first, doreau.
Hulu had it available at one point, but it looks like it is no longer on there. I watched some episodes and it still held up pretty well.
Sledgehammer had the misfortune of being on against The Cosby Show. All forty-one episodes are on YouTube. playlist
I watched the show religiously when I was a kid, almost thought it was in my imagination until the DVDs came out. David Rasche was perfect in this. He reminds me of comedian Bill Burr, who would've done well in a role like that. The original TV broadcast had a fake laugh track throughout the episodes. That was thankfully removed for the DVDs and digital versions.
