On volume one, they STILL haven't fixed the dreadful "squished widescreen" bit from the "Girl Can't Help It" bit (see below). Come to think of it, this is what they should do to full-screen DVDs. It will save them a lot of money to not have to make a new pan and scan transfer, and the non-converted will realize why widescreen is better.
I'm guessing they didn't have the original elements anymore for a re-do of this segment, so they left it as is. Would've been nice, but I'm hardly too worried about it. Love that tagline, BTW. Didn't you almost stand up and cheer when you heard George say that? HEY...how come nobody tried to turn Hicks into a Nauga yesterday?
Another thing I don't like is how they turned the on-screen text into subtitles, only because it's an ugly, primitive-looking font (at least on my three-year-old player). Actually, a friend of mine and I let out a chorus of cheers and applause. I feel so cheated. Silent Bob didn't get Nauga-fied, either, did he?
For those who are curious, it should look something like this... -Kevin (Shrank it a bit, to fit the whole thing in...)
The "squished screen" is a little disconcerting, but it's not my main complaint. Mine is the lack of chapter indexing for the music. It sure would have been better if you could go straight to any song easily. It sure sounds mighty good though.
If you have a TV that does the "anamorphic squeeze", just turn it on & the picture will look right. The chapter stops are the same ones used for the laserdisc, & they were horrible then also.
It looks like it is a 4:3 squeeze of a 2.35:1 anamorphic 35mm film image to me. Wouldn't this still look wrong at 16:9, albeit "less wrong"? Regards,
And what about the preceding footage of McCartney that gets "squeezed" as well, just before the footage from TGCHI. Almost as if they intended for the clip to be squeezed.
Another thing that would've been nice is that, since they've found the videotaped version of the Feb. '64 Washington DC concert, why not use it for a re-edit of all of the songs used from that show, not just the ones added to the VHS version? Nit picking, really. I'm actually quite happy with the set.
