"Viv, you can do a bass part for 'Big Bottom', right?"

"Oh yeah, you know, I've got two hands."

"How aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare you!" Bobbi Fleckman makes her immortal entrance.

"I think I'd be a lot more upset if I weren't so heavily medicated.." (from memory, may be slightly different.)

One of the few select "one long quote" films ever made. I still remember seeing it when it opened, bent over double in the theatre with tears streaming down my face. To this day, I laugh out loud when I put it on.

  4. Wikipedia backs up my recalling a Saxon connection:

"The character appears in part to be a satire of Lemmy from Motörhead, who wore a similar mutton chop beard. However, his onstage mannerisms resemble those of fellow bass player Steve Dawson from the band Saxon, with whom Shearer went on the road before filming This is Spinal Tap. 'Harry Shearer came on tour with us in '82', confirmed Saxon singer Biff Byford. 'The guy he based his character on was our old bass player Steve Dawson – the moustache, the pointing to the audience.'"

I've seen it many a time and always laugh out loud at some of the bits.
A few times I've watched it with people who " didn't get it " and that was uncomfortable. If you know the board game ' Trivial Pursuit ' it was like playing that with people who just could not play it if you know what I mean.

  7. Any Viv Savage line is good. Here's one he said when playing a computer game that looked primitive even when the movie came out:

    Quite exciting, this computer magic!

There's obviously some kind of in-joke with Viv because they are ruthless on him during the in-character commentary.

"Do you think Viv ever knew that his mic wasn't on?" "No...no." "I think that the answer to any question that starts with ' Did Viv know...' would be 'No!'"

I just watched the movie yesterday; some of you people are messing up the quotes. I forgot how much I love this movie.

Paul Benedict's character is the subject of one of Nigel's greatest 'memories' during the 'in-character' commentary.

"They continue to fill a much-needed void" (from the liner notes, one of the most 'upside-down'-funny statements ever written.)

It always cracks me up when he stops to retune the violin.

  22. Indeed. Back when I was a teenage metalhead, that album got as much play as anything else I was listening to at the time. And even today, when noodling around on guitar I'll sometimes launch into the riff from "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight".

You know you love a movie when you pay $150 for the Criterion DVD, which I did, over 10 years ago now. It’s a favourite and I’m a musician, so there was no hesitation.

It was the only way to hear that commentary and it remains a rare DVD, as noted above. I’ve never regretted paying the money. The level of invention is incredible, very talented people involved.
