Okay, let's get this out of the way first: In Russia, ring wears you....

Just uploaded onto NyuTube, in two parts, is the recently-discovered televised version of the trilogy, produced and aired in 1991, right at the point of upheaval in the Soviet Union. It only aired once, and was believed to be lost.

Odds are, this won't be up there with Tarkovsky, or any of the opulently-produced works you may have encountered over the years.

But it is their earnest translation of version they know. Tolkien was banned there for some time, and it wasn't until 1982 that an "authorized" translation of Fellowship Of The Ring came out. Assume some "idealogical adjustments".

And, try not to spend too much time why Gollum is depicted wearing lettuce on his head.

Just read a out this online Thursday night...fascinating to read about it as I've known a few colleagues from Russia...strangely not once did it come up in any discussions and we have talked about Peter Jackson's Trilogy of LOTR and The Hobbit over the years?

At least it's somehow survived and is up online to view for all interested!

Definitely in the "so bad it's good" category - for at least, those who find some bizarre esteem for Plan 9 From Outer Space, Manos: The Hands Of Fate or Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.

Are there any well-known , Russian-region iconic tales about mythical creatures that could have been turned into major motion pictures instead? We're mostly in the dark about folklore of the East.

Yeah soviet (or russian films nowadays) are not exactly blockbusters in the west. Probably Viy (based on Nikolai Gogol's novella) is the most well-known. Adapted several times, with Mario Bava's Black Sunday (loosely based on the book) being perhaps the most popular.

I'm glad I was at least exposed to it in college, thanks to an enlightened, outside-the-box film professor in Junior year (who didn't make it to my Senior year, sadly)

I wonder how long it would have taken me to find out about Tarkovsky, otherwise.

    Stupid, stupid Hollywood-obsessed trade schools...
