Also recorded several years earlier by Dave & Nikki Sudden as The Jacobites and, I think (although I'm not completely sure) that the song originated from one of Dave's earliest bands.

Having asked the people in the know, it transpires that Dave's "Kings And Queens" was written while he was in The Rag Dolls, there's a video of them playing it live in 1983. He apparently performed it live during his brief tenure in The Dogs D'Amour in 1984, then it was recorded on the first Jacobites album the same year.

Wait, the first post by the OP mentions The Beatles' "Her Majesty" and now this post above mentions "Cry Baby Cry" (2nd time) and "Mary Jane"
but we all seem to have forgotten (including me until now) the most famous (and greatest!) Beatles King Song...

The sublime: "Here Comes The Sun King" on Abbey Road! :edthumbs:

Hum... there must not be too many Beatles Bugs scurrying around this thread...

    cheers,

I've got that Nic Jones record! It is most excellent. In fact, I have all 5 of Nic's Lps up through Penguin Eggs and I LOVE them all!:righton:

    (Also Bandoggs and Silly Sisters.)

    cheers,

PS: And tagging onto your Fotheringay track below, the Sandy Denny Fairport Convention track "Fotheringay" was about Mary Queen of Scots, IIRC!

Fotheringay - "Banks Of The Nile"

"Oh my Nancy, dearest Nancy, sure that will never do,
The government has ordered, and we are bound to go,

Yep, I have his 5 solo LPs too, such a talent.

I saw him back in 2014 at a small folk club in Birmingham.

Following his horrific accident he obviously wasn't what he once was, but the magic was still there.

    Fairport Convention - "The Deserter"

"As I was a-walking along Ratcliffe Highway,
A recruiting party came a-beating my way,
They enlisted me and treated me 'til I did not know,
Unto the Queen's barracks they forced me to go.
When first I deserted, I thought myself free,
Until my cruel comrade informed against me.
I was quickly followed after and brought back with speed,
I was handcuffed and guarded, heavy irons put on me.
Court martial, court martial, they held upon me,
And the sentence passed upon me,
    Three hundred and three.
May the Lord have mercy on them for their sad cruelty,
For now the Queen's duty lies heavy on me.
When next I deserted, I thought myself free,
Until my cruel sweetheart informed against me.
I was quickly followed after and brought back with speed,
I was handcuffed and guarded, heavy irons put on me.
Court martial, court martial then quickly was got,
And the sentence passed upon me, that I was to be shot.
May the Lord have mercy on them for their sad cruelty,
For now the Queen's duty lies heavy on me,
Then up rode Prince Albert in his carriage and six,
Saying, "Where is that young man whose coffin is fixed?
Set him free from his irons and let him go free,
For he'll make a good soldier for his Queen and country."
