How is that odd, strange or unique? Or is there someone else mentioned in the song besides Aubrey?

  2. One of my grandmothers was named Fanny. Lived to be 103 (or 104... I forget)

It's not a common name. David Gates didn't seem to think it was, either, as he sang in the first two lines of the song:

    "And Aubrey was her name
A not so very ordinary girl or name"

I have encountered Audrey with a "d" in my life, but never an Aubrey with a "b."

  7. A band name, a song and an album title. "The name Steeleye Span comes from a character in the traditional song "Horkstow Grange" (which they did not actually record until they released an album by that name in 1998). The song gives an account of a fight between John "Steeleye" Span and John Bowlin, neither of whom are proven to have been real people."

Steeleye's 3rd album was 'Ten Man Mop or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again'. "The ... curious subtitle is a reference to Reservoir Butler, who had originally performed one of the songs covered on the album. The band was so struck by his unusual name that they decided it needed to be saved from obscurity."

It's not as common as "John" or "Bill" but it's a "real" name going back hundreds of years.

Well, they often call me Speedo,
but my real name's Mister Earl.

    “Winifer Odd” by Lal Waterson:

    Wsinifer Odd
Was born on one cold May morning in June
    In her grandmother's bedroom
And they waited all that day for last May to come back again,
    But it never came.

    Going to school:
The teachers all agreed that she was nobody's fool,
In fact she was brighter than most.
And they waited for the card from the board to gain her degree,
But it was lost in the post.

    Falling in love:
She fell in love with a boy of seventeen years old,
    At the age of thirty-four.
And she waited all that fall for him to grow tall and slim,
But he was fat and small.

    Waiting for God:
She bent down to pick up a glittering thing and was knocked over by a car.
    It was her lucky star.
And she waited for Death to come and wrap her up warm,
    But he never came.

Lots in Blur songs - Ernold Same, Dan Abnormal, Jubilee, Colin Zeal...

Was years before I realised what "Dan Abnormal" was an anagram of.
