songs about secretly being in love

  1. I think most UK listeners would view this differently in the sense that the song is heavily ironic.

The whole point of this is that the singer is completely and utterly 'in love'.

The picture on the wall hiding a stain; the 'silly phase (I'm) going through'; 'don't make a fuss' are all to mask the singer's feelings of not being quite worthy of the lady he clearly idolizes.

I've never taken it any other way than this - it just doesn't stand up as a straight song.

    Best Wishes
    David

Actually, David, I like your interpretation better. For 31 or 32 years, though, I've taken it as a song directed at someone worth ****ing, but not worth marrying. I wonder if my opinion will change any. (FWIW, I was in such a relationship at the time.)

  5. That must put us about the same age then!

I still rate the album 'The Original Soundtrack' quite highly although I don't play it as often as I used to.

The Police - "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"

Just one of several songs about unrequited love from the early Police years. Boy did I relate to those lyrics. :)

Not sure if they exactly fit but what about:

Sooner or Later - Grass Roots
Step by Step - Eddie Rabbitt
I'd Love You to Want Me - Lobo

You can probably interpret it a few different ways, but 'Secrets' by The Cure immediately comes to mind.

That's the way I've always heard this song. Though the singer professes to not be in love, he clearly is.

I may not understand this song entirely, but is the Cowsills' "The rain, the park, and other things" a candidate?

Absolutely, neither have I. I don't know how it could be misinterpreted!

Meybe this one isn't "love" per se but it had to be kept secret for obvious reasons:

Me And Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul

"Meeeee aaaaand Mrs...Mrs Jones, Mrs. Jones. We got a thiiiiiing going on...".

I agree with your assessment and I love the song. For me the singer seems quite sad and incapable of loving someone who adores him...a very tragic scenario.

"No Tell Lover" by Chicago is one of my favs...

Everyone keeps tellin' me that this affair's not meant to be
Even though I need you night and day
Walk away if you see me coming, even though it's you I'm lovin'

    You're Beautiful - James Blunt

    My life is brilliant.
    My love is pure.
    I saw an angel.
    Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
    She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
    'Cause I've got a plan.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

    Yeah, she caught my eye,
    As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
    Flying high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

Bob Weir/Grateful Dead (lyrics by John Perry Barlow)

Dizzy ain't the word for the way that you're
    Makin' me feel now
    I need some indication if
All of this is real now
I've heard it said there could be something
    Wrong in my head, now
Could it be infatuation or am I just
    Bein' mislead, now
Little bolt of inspiration, right beside me now
    Sparkin' my imagination, lightening now
Causin' instant excitation, cause you're frightening now
Come to heed my supplication, got to have it now
My light'nin' too, My light'nin' too
