I know there was a point that Mark Knopfler got sick of playing "I Want My MTV". He wrote it as a satirical joke, but became a huge hit. He then had to play it every night because it was so much in demand.

In a reverse on this topic, the Grateful Dead began to play an unreleased song titled, Keep Your Day Job.
The song was disliked rather intensely by the deadheads and they wrote letters to the band asking they cease performing it at concerts.
The Dead obliged and the song vanished from their set list, never to receive a studio release.

Bowie hated this song so much he took it off of Never Let Me Down after the first pressings were released and asked for it to never be released again.

I often wonder how the 2018 version would have gone had it been allowed.

Probably nothing impressive, was never a big fan of the 2018 versions but I will say that the 2018 Zeroes was a MASSIVE improvement and made me love the song.

    Great thread idea.

I think the artists who complain are thinking "Why love THAT song" when their favorites are ignored.

I luv them. I always had a soft spot for NLMD despite everything, but 2018 version I felt was totes brilliant.

  14. Jani Lane is kind of a sad character - not so much a lesson in "be careful what you wish for", as "be sure you can live with the choices you make to get what you wish for."

Also, he should've stuck with his birth name - John Kennedy Oswald. It's much cooler than the fey glam name he went with.

The reformed New York Dolls were doing "Piece Of My Heart" and when it was suggested to David Jo that they record it he said he didn't want to get stuck having to sing it for years.

I know he didn't write it.
But I read him saying that he didn't really like it because he would never write lyrics like that. ...something like that.

I once had occasion to ask him what he thought the worst Jethro Tull song was. He picked "Back to the Family." He then picked "Budapest" as the best one. I think "Family" is the better song of the two.

    I've never understood this

If an artist hate a song, why recording and release it in first place?

Maybe she's turned to not liking the song more nowadays, I don't know, but I don't think it's so much the song she dislikes as the way she's referred to as "The Material Girl" by the press. That's the way I've always heard it, that she wishes she didn't record it for that reason, not due the the quality of the song.
