FYI - Xylo generally used in orchestra; Marimba generally used in small ensembles or solo (i.e. 'rock bands'); Vibra generally used in 'jazz'.

Most of Zappa's (studio) output involving one of the three centers around the Marimba and Ruth Underwood.

"Fracture" by King Crimson (the quiet middle section has Bruford playing the melody first on vibraphone, then xylophone).

That is a marimba, not a xylophone.

  6. Yes, I think he actually plays it on camera in the film, but I can't remember on which piece... "Flakes" perhaps?

there's also a xylorimba or xylo-marimba which is like a xylophone with some lower notes attached- 4 or 5 octaves i think.

also: marimba and xylophone bars are of wood. vibraphone (or wibraharp) bars are of metal, and vibes include a mechanism for creating the vibrato- a series of caps on the resonators turned my a motor.

    bladabladabla....

  11. I don't know that song. But think xylo as a more "kiddie" sounding instrument, with those high notes and hard mallets. It might be an ordeal if you are not a fan, but play "Knots" by Gentle Giant (the solo in the middle)... Then relisten to the main riff from Zappa's "Inca Roads".

To quote losely Ruth Underwood herself, the marimba has that "ridiculous", lounge-ey or old lady tearoom sound.

come to think of it, iirc- that's vibes, not xylo (or marimba).

Insert "That's a marimba/vibraphone" liberally throughout this thread.

And while we're at it, throw in "glockenspiel" too.

  16. Yeah, I thought I might be wrong on this as I am not familiar with all the percussionist's instruments. Ruth's excellent marimba work is on display on Frank Zappa's Dub Room Special.

i know E used the glockenspiel quite a bit, seems quite a few bands used this over the xylo, whats the difference? metal or wood?

I thought that as soon as I saw this thread.

Preemptive NB: "Born To Run" = glockenspiel

glock is metal and usually hit with hard plastic mallets- think marching bands.

i think the glock is even higher pitched than the xylo.

    Steel drums, I'm pretty sure.

Perhaps this thread title should be changed to "Song that feature mallet/keyboard percussion"?

The word Xylophone comes from Xylos, Greek for wood. :)

Greek for Wood. Sounds like it could be a Zappa tune.
