Is that a Xylophone during the intro to RIKKI DON"T LOSE THAT NUMBER?

I think that's a Marimba ..it sounds too low sonic-wise to be a Xylophone! Or,maybe, for that matter, a Vibraphone.

Featured in the intro to "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and making its first appearance in the malletspotting thread is the flopanda, which is an obscure electric marimba.

it's getting to the point where it should be "songs that feature musical instruments!"

Timebox, a precursor to Patto, used vibes extensively in their music, and they definitely rocked, albeit with a jazzy sound occasionally. Vibes are very similar to xylophones and glockenspiels, but their bars are aluminum rather wood ... this may have already been stated in this thread ... just skimmed to see if Timebox had been mentioned

"rather THAN wood" ... sorry for the word ommission above

"But It's Alright" by JJ Jackson has a great xylophone solo.

"Europa" from the Desperate Straights album by the Slapp Happy/Henry Cow conglomerate.
Pierre Moerlen of Gong is listed as playing percussion on that track and I'm fairly certain that it's him and not Cris Cutler that's playing the xylophone. FWIW, the instrument sounds "woody" to me!

Not sure, but the intro to "Beauty's Only Skin Deep" by the Temptations sounds like a xylophone.

    Nice!

To that point, "Changes" from Yes' 90125 features a musical instrument.

Another Zappa track, "Wild Love." In fact, this one has xylophone (the weird high-pitched repeated note after each chorus), chimes (during the instrumental "chorus"), marimba (during the verses and the "Sinister Footwear" bit) and vibraphone (during the final instrumental "verse").

Vibraphone on the former, marimba on the latter.

Alan White played them on the song in the live video from that tour. At least I'm relatively sure.

I've seen Glenn Kotche play crotales with Wilco in the song "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart."

I believe Neil Peart has them too.

I'd vote for Billy Joe & The Checkmate's "Percolator (Twist)" from late 1961. I think that's a xylophone, maybe a marimba. Also The Electric Indian's "Keem-o-Sabe" (1969), Betty Everett's "Shoop-Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)," and Spyro Gyra's "Morning Dance."

Steel drums in the intro, marimba solo. Vibes and marimba player Dave Samuels was with them for several years. Mallet freaks might check into his band Double Image with two mallet players (him and David Friedman). He also played on Zappa In New York.

I don't doubt that you're right, I just have a horrible memory. And they look to me like they should sound more like a high-pitched cymbal, but since you mention it, I do recall a credit for White playing "drums and crotales" on some Yes album which might have been this one.

The Tormato inner sleeve mentions him playing crotales on a few cuts.
