OK, admittedly sound quality on that particular YouTube clip leaves MUCH to be desired, but the Move's cover of Hey Grandma IS better than the Moby Grape original.
Moby Grape's "Hey Grandma" is one of my favorite songs from the San Francisco era. The Move's version is a cover of one of my favorite songs from the San Francisco era. I do own it.
Don't get me wrong, I do like the Moby Grape original, but the Move's version is decidedly superior. Sometimes a cover is better than the original, and that's what happened in this case.
Burton Cummings - Break it to them Gently A song about going to prison. Break it to them gently when you tell my Mom and Dad When you see my baby sister be as kind as you can And break it to my Grandma, who said "That boy's wild and bad" Break it to them gently when you tell them that I won't be coming home again
Lightnin' Hopkins - My Grandpa Is Old Too! "My grandpa he shouts for joy Been takin' care of me ever since I was a boy He getting old now And he really is Really I know it 'cause I'm old myself"
The Seldom Scene - Grandpa Get Your Guitar Progressive bluegrass band from Maryland. "Grandpa Get Your Guitar" is the opening track from their 1994 album "Like We Used to Be", released on Sugar Hill Records. "Grandpa get your guitar, let's sit down in the backyard We can sing that one about going home to that mansion in the sky"
Little Big Town--Welcome to the Family 'Cause Grandpa's the local sheriff Yeah he's the judge and the jury too Uncle Bill's the undertaker, Son He'll dig a hole for you Cousin Jesse, he's just crazy He'll fight you just for fun Mama's got a real bad temper And daddy's got a shotgun
Okay...but I will mention the sequel: "Grandpa's Gonna Sue The Pants Off Of Santa" by Elmo Shropshire Some others: "Grandpa Boogie" by Grandpa Jones "Grandpa Got Run Over By A Beer Truck" by Da Yoopers "Grandma's Hands" by Bill Withers "Grandma's Feather Bed" by John Denver "Grandma's Revenge" by Bananas At Large "Grandma's Killer Fruitcake" by Elmo Shropshire "Please Don't Make Me Play That Grandma Song Again" by Elmo Shropshire
Solomon Burke - Be Bop Grandma Released as a single on Atlantic in 1961. B-side of "Just out of Reach (Of My Two Open Arms)". "She's a be bop grandma Who thinks she's a sweet sixteen She can dance so good She can keep up with Maybelline I didn't know my grandma Was a rock 'n' roll queen"
I love The Move, and they had GREAT taste in cover songs. But I don’t agree that their version of “Hey Grandma” is superior. If it’s your opinion that it is, that’s fine...but you look a little foolish stating this as a fact.
The Doors - Land Ho! “Grandma loved a sailor, who sailed the frozen sea/ Grandpa was that whaler and he took me on his knee“
I was going to post the dreadful Clive Dunn song - merely to mention that it was written by Herbie Flowers. Wonder if Lou Reed liked it?
