As a songwriter myself, I'm especially interested in the transformation of a song in one's head to its final stage of release. Certain songs, not that many, leave with the feeling that the artist left absolutely no stone unturned in arranging and finishing the song. They have this sense of completeness, they've been taken as far as they possibly can go. A perfect example is Edgar Winter Group's Frankenstein which to me is so inspired, every distinct part of it, and it all ends up fitting together magically.

As an added bonus, you gotta see this if you never saw the live version. If you watch this beginning to end you will agree with me that Edgar Winter is a god.

First one I thought of is this one. It's become almost a cliche, yet it's true that this song was taken as far as it could possibly be taken. And then some.

This song was definitely taken a ridiculously long way past "as far as it could go." Maybe that's why I like it so much!

Seems they went all the way with this little tune. It's got everything: long pretentious synth intro, stacked Queen style harmonies, dramatic stops and starts, mini pop opera break, speedy solos and then the whole track finally runs out of gas and slows down to a complete stop. Love it!

I think Springsteen has a knack for this: Rosalita, Kitty's Back, Born to Run, Jungleland, Thundercrack...
