I tried a search and couldn't find a prior thread on this. (It could be my searching skills.) My apologies if this is a duplicate.

I'm wondering about a list of songs that were hits for multiple artists.

(I'm not thinking "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles that showed up on the charts a second time in the late 70s. I'm thinking more like, "Twist and Shout" that was a hit for the Isley Brothers and the Beatles.)

All of the following versions of these two songs were in the top 40:

Mack The Knife: The Dick Hyman Trio, Richard Hayman and Jan August, Lawrence Welk, Louis Armstrong, Billy Vaughn, Bobby Darin, and Ella Fitzgerald. Bobby Darin's was the biggest hit.

Unchained Melody: Les Baxter (from the movie "Unchained" - yep, that's why it's called "Unchained Melody" :agree: ), Al Hibbler, Roy Hamilton, June Valli (all 4 versions from 1955). The Righteous Brothers' version reached #4 in the US, #1 in UK. Les Baxter's version reached #1 in the US.

4. Worth noting, although not by multiple artists:
Chubby Checker's "The Twist" was not only a hit twice, it hit NUMBER ONE twice (not sure any other ever did that). Actaully, I think it was released a third time, but didn't make No. 1 that last time.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

Neil Sedaka hit twice with "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", once with the R&R version, once with the lounge version.

I know that 'Monster Mash' by Bobby 'Boris' Picket became a hit again in the early '70s. I'm not sure how that happened.

And, of course, 'Nights In White Satin' which was originally released in 1967 became a hit in the early seventies when it was re-released....1971? As a result, you'll find 'Nights In White Satin' on a number of 70's hit compilations.

Rock Around the Clock, hit three times. The only one too do so (if I remember correctly).
Todd Rundgren's Hello It's Me, hit twice.

Keeping with the theme of different artists having hits with the same song (people seem to be missing that point  ), here are some more:

Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu) : Domenico Modugno (1958), Dean Martin (1958), and the McGuire Sisters (1958), Bobby Rydell (1960), Al Martino (1975).

Macarthur Park : Richard Harris (1968), Donna Summer (1978).

"Locomotion" was also a Top 10 hit for Kylie Minogue in 1988. Both the Little Eva and Grand Funk versions went to #1. I think it's still the only song to be #1 by different artists.

I believe that distinction goes to "Yesterday," but I could be wrong.

Corrections: it was not Good day sunshine a hit in the 70s, it was Got to get you into my life by EWF, and it was not a hit in the 60s by the Beatles, but also in the 70s.

Carpenters and Marvelettes also scored #1 with Please Mr. Postman.

Kyu Sakamoto and Taste of Honey both hit with Sukiyaki
Without You by Nillson and Mariah Carey
and Speaking of Linda Ronstadt:
LR and Betty Everett - Your no good
LR and Martha and the Vandellas - Heat Wave
LR and Doris Troy - Just One Look
LR and Little Anthony - Hurts So Bad
LR and Roy Orbison - Blue Bayou
LR and Miracles - Ooo baby baby
LR and Billy Joe Royal - I knew you when
LR and Buddy Holly 2 - It's so easy
LR and Every Brothers - When will I be loved
and a few more

That reminds me of one of my most hated songs of all time: "Puppy Love" by Paul Anka & later by Donny Osmond.

nobody mentioned The Ventures "Walk Dont Run"?

1) Johnny Smith 1959

2) The Ventures 1960

3) The Ventures 1964 "Walk Dont Run-'64"

22. A few years ago I frequented an AOL classical-music chatroom where the songwriter and pianist David Mann (who has since passed on) was a regular. He rated "There I've Said It Again" as his own favorite among the tunes he'd written, precisely because it was a hit twice (first for Vaughn Monroe, then for Bobby Vinton.)

"He Will Break Your Heart" by Jerry Butler (1960), then the same song with a different title "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)" made it to No. 1 in 1975 by that great trio Tony, Orlando, and let's not forget Dawn. I must give credit for this one to a recent post on BSN.
