The Lone Cadaver has an interesting list. I do recall owning most of the singles on 45 of the Who and Procol cuts mentioned in his post.

The Who's Join Together is now mainly available with additional hornpipes compared with the original release. I tend to prefer the original version; it shows up now and again but mainly the revised version is what you see on CD.

Probably the rarest Procol cut is the studio version of the Blue Danube. It was supposedly on some kind of Austrian LP of Strauss songs that was a compilation; but I have never seen that in the wild. It did show up on the now long out of print version of Exotic Birds and Fruit on the Friday music label on CD (US release). But otherwise that is long gone. The live version (which is actually better) has shown up in a few places. There is also a version of As Strong As Samson in a different key and sounds more "country" in the guitar part that was on 45. It has been released as a bonus track but to my ear sounds a bit different than the original 45 version.

The flip side of Hocus Pocus by Focus has Hocus Pocus II which was hugely sped up in terms of tempo. It showed up on a greatest hits CD much later.

Wasn't there a fairly popular song by the Smiths that pretty hard to find on CD?

Same goes for their early B-side Glow. Was MIA for a long time until the re-release of their debut album:

Yep. Just didn't mention it, as I never really cared all that much for it, especially compared to "Gently".

Edit: It's not that I dislike it, though.

This is one of three Spandau Ballet songs I actually know (apart from True and Gold). Saint Etienne released a pretty good cover of it a couple of years ago.

The Pointer Sisters did a 7" called Life Your Life Before You Die, which is in the style of Fairytale. I don't think it's appeared anywhere since that single, apart from a country compilation for the USMC - my partner's dad served, and he somehow got this weird box set of country songs for forces radio, which she inherited.

Same goes for Tom Waits' Blue Skies which isn't on any sort of album, though there's a demo on one of those cash-in albums.

Also, Van Morrison's Caledonia - hard to locate now, and sort of forgotten. Hard to imagine that stuff from the peak period of these artists (the last two singles I mentioned are both from 1974) aren't in circulation, but there we go.

Yes; it did show up on the New Age of Atlantic Sampler (alone with the long verison of America by Yes) and didn't get wide release until Coda. Funny, that track gets regular airplay on Sirius XM and now shows up on the web download release of best hits by Zep.

He wanted out of his contract with Capitol but he had one more album to deliver(Brand New Morning) and one more single with the System, although they are not on the label. 1971 Single only Detroit classic and staple, this is why it was on Live Bullet and why the crowd went nuts on the record.

It wasn’t on the original Coda, only on reissues from 1993 onwards and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t included in the Uk reissues from ‘93

Tina Turner's One of the living was the second single from the Mad Max beyond Thunderdome soundtrack. The first single, We don't need another hero, shows up on many of her compilations and V/A compilations, but One of the living seems all but forgotten.
