They would start each concert with a few gong notes. I think that is included in the Between Nothingness.. live album.
K. + J.J. - Gong Rock The closing track from the album "K. + J.J.", released in 1955 on Bethlehem Records. "K." is the trombonist Kai Winding, "J.J." stands for the trombonist J.J. Johnson. They are accompanied by the great Milt Hinton on bass, Dick Katz on piano, and Al Harewood on drums (and playing the gong).
Someone mentioned the Mahavisnu Orchestra. Drummer Billy Cobham's Crosswind, and Total Eclipse were the records that immediately came to me!
The Yusef Lateef Quintet - Meditation The closing track from the album "The Sounds of Yusef", released in 1958 on Prestige Records. The contemplative and mellow track is opening with a gong and an Indian flute. The band's percussionist Oliver Jackson playing the gong. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack/New Jersey.

"Lateralus" by Tool. One of my all-time favorite video musical moments is watching their drummer Danny Carey playing along to this track. At 1:47 he looks down to spot the mallet, then at 1:52 it's the grab and smash. As a drummer, that's one of those moments when I know I'm just not good enough...
