I want to use my Discman as my main CD player at home. What are the shortcomings? Do they scratch CDs?

there are literally hundreds of cd player models new or used that will give you better sound than an old discman

I'm using mine on a second system and it sounds great.

As mentioned, use the line out and turn ESP off, enjoy.

I bought a SLS - 120 off of Ebay after reading the thread here that mentioned it. I am very happy with it. Great sounding little unit.

They sound quite good for what they are, but many other players come very close, and a good many others exceed its performance.

I would not turn volume all the way up, but at about 7.5 the way up. No need to stress out the amp in the poor thing.

ESP is Electronic Shock Protection which is not necessary if it's not moving while playing.

Where does oversampling come into all of this? I recall reading that portable CD players have a lot more oversampling and that players with little to no oversampling have better sound quality.

I used mine for several years as a standalone player. It sounded very well indeed. The volume control is a moot point with a line -out connection. It died years ago and I can't honestly say I miss it though.

''In signal processing, oversampling is the process of sampling a signal with a sampling frequency significantly higher than the Nyquist rate. Theoretically a bandwidth-limited signal can be perfectly reconstructed if sampled above the Nyquist rate, which is twice the highest frequency in the signal. Oversampling improves resolution, reduces noise and helps avoid aliasing and phase distortion by relaxing anti-aliasing filter performance requirements.''

Am not that familiar with Discmans but i'm sure they will sound good..There could be some limitations however.Such as transport noise levels.Whether there is a dedicated line-out rather than just one attached to a cheap volume control. If the ESP/bass control when turned off reverts the unit back to a flat frequecncy signal ( rather than having an artificially thin sound sound signature in order to make the bass boost/esp seem even more impressive when turned on).But if all that is ok then it should sound fine.

I've heard some Sonys connected to big rigs and the sound was excellent. I for one would not cheap out on a CD player unless I were broke enough to. Get an Onkyo.

It's a D-E307CK. From 1997. In turning it upside down I noticed a "limit" switch. Lol. Set to off.

I've read good things about using discman's in a system. Especially if used as a transport connected to a DAC. If you feel so inclined, I've also read about improved sound quality if using it while battery powered as opposed to plugging it in. Supposedly it's about 'cleaner' power vs. what's supplied from the wall. Should be easy enough to try and compare! I've had a Sony discman in my 'spares' closet for years and never have gotten around to 'playing' with it and the big rig. Someday...

Good call..Saying that, just think how cheaply someone could put together a good sounding second-hand system nowadays from ebay if money was tight.

    Discman
    £10..Technics/Denon Amp £25..Tannoy Speakers £20.
