Just listening to this! As odd and compelling as the film itself.

All scores are soundtracks. There was a time when that was all that was needed in a soundtrack: the appropriate music to complete the vision the director had for the mis-en-scene.

I bet there are thousands of directors out there, who would pine for a film that didn't have to have a pop song attached to it, as a ruse to somehow legitimize a film to an audience not sophisticated to know any better.

Absolutely. Fortunately, there are great scores that do not have "hits" but are nonetheless compelling to hear.

A problematic movie, to say the least; but a fine soundtrack. Gato B., Last Tango.

I've never seen this movie all the way thru, but it's a great soundtrack album - Sonny Rollins, Alfie.

This Throne of Blood first half excerpt is the closest thing I could find online to Akira Kurosawa's classic film soundtrack by Masuro Sano. It's listed on Spotify but unplayable for any number of likely reasons. A familiarity with the film helps but is completely unnecessary: a full album listen is its own experience.

I don't think it is possible to generalise like this. For a long time (& possibly still?) getting a song on a movie soundtrack was very lucrative and record company pushers were keen to sell songs to movies which did often result in random compilations from films where the music was not really integral to the film, usually throwaway romcoms or action comedies. However some directors (Scorcese, Tarantino, Cameron Crowe, Richard Linklater, Edgar Wright to name a few) think very carefully about the music in their films and the function that it performs. The songs are not just random but specifically chosen and specifically placed. Think about Son of a Preacher Man in Pulp Fiction, What Is Life in Goodfellas, All The Way From Memphis in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore or Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous. These choices are the very opposite of lazy. They are very precise.

The only thing more painful than listening to Jack Nicholson or Oliver Reed is Listening to Pierce Brosnon in Mamma Mia.

Bah. I don't buy that "Jack Nicholson bad singing" argument because the Tommy soundtrack features some really great tracks that are better than versions at original 1969 album.

Nobody said anything about the album as a whole. Agree on those two tracks BTW, I'd add PinBall Wizard too, but I'm a huge Elton fan.

Ok but too many times I heard the same story that Tommy soundtrack is not good due to Jack Nicholson / Oliver Reed / Ann Margaret singing. It's ridiculous.
Pete Townshend has rewrite Tommy in the nicest way.
