here are some I watched recently.

Musarañas (Shrew's Nest) (2014) - very good drama/thriller, the ending was not quite what I expected, but one that I will probably remember for a while. Some people have compared it to another American movie, but I think it's not quite the same theme, and this movie stands well on its own. Very good movie with very good acting

El cuerpo (The Body) (2012) - nice mystery, crime drama
Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest) (2016) - also a nice mystery crime drama

El habitante incierto (The Uninvited Guest) (2004) - I think idea is a bit similar to Oscar winning Parasite (2019) . A simple idea for a fun thriller. Some of the parts were unexpectedly comical and funny. Overall a nice suspenseful thriller

Pretty much what you said. He is spanish, but for obvious reasons he had to left the country. Other people left the country after the civil war. Some came back after 1975, some didn't. All of them are and will be spanish for us.

Sean Penn made a movie on the same novel, The pledge in 2001

The Spanish language films I've seen and liked have all been mentioned (The Invisible Guest, Amores Perros, The Secret in their Eyes), another one I though was really good was The Night of the Sunflowers.

An excellent argentinian movie, funny, shocking, violent, dramatic...

Totally agree. It takes the viewer on a wild, wild ride.

If we're doing the Spanish language thing and not just films made in Spain: Nine Queens (a real touch of Mamet), Pan's Labyrinth, Night of the Sunflowers, Amores Perros, The Secret in Their Eyes, Devil's Backbone, Sex and Lucia, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Vanilla Sky, Cronos, The Headless Woman, Chico and Rita, Marshland, The Motorcycle Diaries and almost anything by Almodovar. TV: if you like your crime grubby and historical, try La Peste (The Plague); if you like it modern and (almost too) convoluted, try I Know Who You Are.

I have seen Nine Queens. Wow. I had never heard of it and it was superb. Yes, very Mamet like.

They say the Spanish version of Dracula is superior to the US version - they shot the same scenes with two casts (other than Lugosi), with the US version filming earlier in the day - but I’ve yet to get around to watching my DVDs! Another “when I retire” project.

Also, I’ll note that any del Toro Spanish language film is worth watching.

I liked Intacto and I used to own it on DVD (I guess I sold it or gave it away?). Good performance by Max Von Sydow. One of the memorable scenes: blindfolded running through a forest!
For edgy, different, and interesting, international cinema often beats American movies, which are often sequels ad nauseum, and I can't stand the U.S. tendency to take a fine foreign film and "remake" it (e.g., The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn't need to be remade). Another case of a "remade" movie was Miss Bala. The original Mexican film was very realistic and gritty. The American remake was cheap and crappy. When it comes to cinema, "made in the U.S.A." is not a necessarily a badge of honor.

BTW, I have read every post in this thread on Spanish movies and I have a long list of movies to hunt down. I think we need a thread on Italian movies (has that been done yet?).

watched these 2 pretty good movies, both are a mix of thriller and drama

Quien a hierro mata (Eye for an Eye) (2019) - a revenge type of movie
Cordes (Prey) (2019) - fans of Cujo might enjoy this one

I've been a student of Mexico's golden age and have gathered
quite a collection on DVD; mostly with English subs in very
    rare oop editions.

I'm going to put them UP for auction on ebay. Prices will be HIGH.

I once had a video cassette of a version of Wuthering Heights from Bunuel IIRC. Since Wuthering heights is an interest of mine, I would like to see it again, if it ever came to DVD.
