There has got to be a better place to put the hifi in that apartment than that location. In that location I'd just stick with the 686's frankly. And yeah Heresys are not going to work in that location.
My Special 40’s are around that same 24” from the wall. I am sure this is a case of the room influencing sound. The Special 40 is a very good speaker and I am glad they work so well for you. In my case, I am not sure they are the right speaker for me and my room. Nonetheless, this is the issue why I would not suggest the Special 40 for the OP. I am wondering if a smaller Dynaudio might work well in this particular space.
That would be a great deal if a set of Heritage Specials could be found for CatManDude’s stated budget of under $3k.
