This is a spin off of a Doors thread where I recalled the shiver that swept over me the first time I heard "Riders On The Storm." From the tiny transistor radio hidden under my pillow; the world falling away finding myself alone on a rainy highway. And still feel to this day.

Any songs trigger that frisson of mystery and dread? They don't have to be on purpose scary like Sabbath, could even be that jolly pop warble that you alone find eerie.

Another for me is "Dock Of The Bay," that whistling.

10cc - "I'm Not In Love" soundtrack to an alien abduction, hear that tractor beam vacuum?

And this, gonna use the one video link for

Ace - "How Long" (1974) sinister intro! Menacing guitar break.

Driscoll & Auger's cover of Dylan's This Wheel's on Fire has always had a spooky, ominous feel for me:

little wonder they were "requesting quiet" ;)

"frisson of mystery and dread". i *may* need to borrow that phrase some day lol

monster mash got to me for a few weeks. but i was like 5 :)

as did kim fowley's "coming to take me away". but that i'm sure is because i knew lurch from 1965 on. that guy was scary really.

the whistling in "dock" gave you chills? ha

hahaha for sure! That flange on the chorus is out of control. Thank you - I never heard that.

I thought that (10cc) was pretty psychedelic. I was driving at night in '75, on a long bridge over a big river and that was on the radio... fit perfectly.

"How Long" is great too - great solo. A friend kept singing that chorus each day at the beginning of the pandemic.

the lyric works for me too.

Well, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme
But I can't help but have my suspicion
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem

And you said you was never intending
To break up our scene in this way
But there ain't any use in pretending
It could happen to us any day

How long has this been going on?

oh, and "shakin' all over" gave me the shivers lol. but not the creeps :)

Shivers qualify, as does outright terror. Man those Ace lyrics are sinister!

“Knoxville Girl” by the Louvin Brothers is the graphic account of a grisly murder of a woman by her not-sorry suitor as she pleads for her life. Light entertainment it ain’t.

Not a song per se, but when I was a kid I hated Voices of Old People on Simon & Garfunkel's otherwise perfect album Bookends. It horrified me.

That moaning at the end of Gold Dust Woman. If I’m alone at night I still have to turn it off before the end it still freaks me out.

Faith In Others - Opeth. Production values are extremely high as well - the whole album this is off, Pale Communion, is an audiophile level album for sure.

  22. If memory serves, the lyrics aren't about a cheating partner, but a band member who was preparing to quit and join some other outfit. Or something like that.
Well, considering the circumstances, I always found the song kind of disturbing. Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay was released about a month after Redding's death, when his plane crashed into a lake. I always pictured him looking out from the dock on the lake the plane went down in.

When I was about 11 years old the Alice Cooper song “I love the dead” gave me the creeps, especially once I realized what the song was about. Yuck! And at one point there is this sound of buzzing flies that just brings home how filthy that song really is. Nevertheless, I always somehow liked that song quite a bit.

I was already much older when I heard Gentle Giant’s “Alucard” for the first time. Holy crap! Just read the song title backwards ands listen to the song. Brrrrr.

And staying with Gentle Giant, their song “The Edge Of Twilight” must be one of the eeriest and most ominous music ever made. By the way, it has a timpani solo…

Careful! These songs cannot be unheard…

i'm confident you somehow missed my quoting that lyric in answer to the poster's mention of a "pandemic".' so, i'll post them again for you.

an admittedly attempted entendre get it? no, that's ok too :)

yeah, it bothered me that otis died when he did, and i loved the final hit. but the "whistling" didn't bother me. that was our OP that was troubled by it lol. in fact, i can whistle it at this moment note for note. you'll have to take me at my word ;)

well, they are now! if i have anything to tie them to ;)
