The copy I just ordered in the States has the photo cover, not the drawing- looks like that is the EU cover- nicer.

Yea, it's the Jazzman cover and part of their ongoing series.

  3. FWIW, I seem to remember that there are two (2) different CD issues specifically of Vol 1 of this series (with 2 different covers)-- and that one of them has two (2) *extra tracks* (not found on the other one).

    Here are the two versions:

12 tracks: Various - Spiritual Jazz - Esoteric, Modal And Deep Jazz From The Underground 1968-77

14: tracks: Various - Spiritual Jazz (Esoteric, Modal + Deep Jazz From The Underground 1968-77)

Coltrane's "Ascension", "Love Supreme" and "Meditations" are some of the holiest recordings I've heard. This isn't really "spiritual jazz" by label, but when I heard albums like "Dark Magus", "On The Corner" and "In A Silent Way" , I was so immensely impressed and astonished by what I heard it reached that spiritual realm. Spiritual in a different way I guess.

I just published an interview with Wendell Harrison, co-founder of the Tribe label, whose career has been fascinating. He returned to Detroit in 1970 as Motown was pulling out and the music was changing; Wendell was an important part of that change. The piece can be found here.

Can’t believe I am just now finding this post! That’s so amazing, Bill. I got to meet Phil Ranelin recently when he sold off some of his records. He seemed like a very kind and humble man. I’ve also been dipping my toe into the Tribe music scene. I’d love to get a copy of “An Evening With The Devil” someday.

It's being reissued by Pure Pleasure. Phil's record is already out from them.

"Rhythm X" and "Hells Bells" will be out on Pure Pleasure in February and are ready to preorder now.
"Clifford Jordan in the World" will be reissued by the japanese P-Vine label in March and can be preordered, too.

    I'm in for all three.

I just had the pleasure of listening to, and interviewing, Muriel Grossmann. Her latest, Golden Rule, is very much about Coltrane, and is the first record she has released on vinyl.
Here's the review/interview (long): Muriel Grossman and The Golden Rule.

Is there any point where the term 'Spiritual Jazz' first gained currency when describing this music?
Would A Love Supreme be considered the first 'Spiritual Jazz" record?

Yeah, "Glass Bead Games" by the Clifford Jordan Quartet too, but it sold out in preorder and is not available anymore. (My copy is on it's way)

  18. For those wondering, here's the track-listing for Vol 9 (or at least the CD version - not sure if the LP version will have more tracks)...

BTW, I have to say I'm personally a little disappointed that the next volume in the series is all Blue Note material -- if only because this is all stuff I have on CD already (everything except maybe one of the Duke Pearson tracks, though off the top of my head, I think I may have both of those too).

The one nice inclusion though (even though I already have it on CD too), is the very last track by Solomon Ilori "Song Of Praise To God" -- which was one of the 3 (then) previously unreleased tracks from the expanded version of Ilori's 1963 Blue Note album African High Life. Thing is, there are 3 quite long bonus tracks from a totally separate 1964 session which, frankly, are even WAY better (and more jazz-oriented) than the entire original African High Life album. Those 3 tracks are really phenomenal, and I'm tickled pink that the compiler(s) at Jazzman saw fit to include one of them on this comp.

I've got all 8 volumes of this incredible series on CD, but I'm not so sure about buying volume 9 (since I've already got all of it) -- but I may buy it anyway, for the liners, and also just to support the ongoing work of the series (essentially vote with my pocketbook).

    Anyway, here are the details.

Miles might not have used the term, but IMHO "He Loved Him Madly" is about as spiritual as anything I've ever heard.

My first thought as well. Still going to buy it though as I also have all the others and I don't mind the odd compilation with some tracks I already have.
