Tidal and Qobuz yes and maybe just maybe Deezer but not Amazon HD under it’s current state of affairs.

Only if you pay for prime along with Amazon HD otherwise true audiophile quality starts at $14.99 and up with the likes of Amazon HD(stand-alone no prime option) and higher for the likes of Tidal, Deezer and Qobuz.

Strangely, I don't recall ever seeing any of those alleged proclamations anywhere ever.

I also use Amazon Music. As with you, this is where I experiment with stuff before I consider physical media. But the main draw for me is that for many vinyl purchases I get the mp3s for free, which is great for travel listening.

Not exclusively but I do that a lot with Pandora. Of course, it's all based on what I've already told it I like and dislike, but I do enjoy the element of surprise when I'm listening.

I’ve always thought Pandora was a bit different; that you can’t listen to albums and that it is more like a custom radio (as it draws music from your preferences). Is this incorrect?

You're correct, it is more like radio in that regard. If you build a good station, it's like radio that plays only songs you like.

But that's the Pandora model -- tailored radio stations based on the user's interests. Spotify/Amazon/Apple etc. can do that for you if you want but the main appeal is being able to access anything from their vast library at any time.

Right, I do that with some things on Amazon. I don't use Spotify or Apple at this point.

For the free version. The premium version of Pandora also allows for on demand listening, playlist creating and basically is just like all the other streaming services.

I use YouTube to sample things for free before I decide whether to buy a CD.

SQ is still excellent. But agreed that the UI still needs some work.

Worst case, download an album and play....avoids many issues at the moment.

The phone is recently bought but an iPhone 6 that I keep updated. Verizon is the provider. I wondered if the Amazon app is not supported by Apple, but that would not be a partial thing. If it wasn't I couldn't have downloaded and used the app. I'm in the Boston area.

I use Spotify through my Apple TV connected to my stereo, controlled by iPhone. Can tidal be used this way as well?

Don't have an Apple TV so not certain. I generally wouldn't use my Roku for this either, just my phone to an external speaker via BT.

Some of the Shanling DAP offerings support Tidal via Wifi, which is interesting.
