In the movie when Stan and Ollie get to the UK , they are told by Bernard Delfont the theater manager/agent, that Norman Wisdom has all the theaters sold out, it occurred to me that our American friends would not know who Norman Wisdom was?
Norman was a British national institution, and was later Knighted, to become Sir Norman, his films and stage shows were immensely popular.
Things had moved on since the days of Stan and Ollie and they were a thing of the past, their films were shown on TV but not at the picture houses.
Norman Wisdom came up with a `little man` character that reflected the times of working class people struggling to get on in post war Britain, he would struggle against Bullies, Women, Bosses, and the Upper Classes, but in the end always came out the winner. It is an extraordinary fact that Norman Wisdom was a National hero in `ALBANIA!`, he even has a statue there, and was mobbed when he visited.

This clip is extraordinary in that it features a very young Oliver Reed, and an even younger Michael Caine as `Teddy-Boys`.
And I would really like to know where I can get that Werewolf cut-out!

God, Wisdom was awful, lachrymose and not that funny, though. Not a bad straight actor when given the chance.

In the movie why does Stan's wife Ida refuse to sit next to Bernard Delfont or shake his hand?

You could probably say that about any comedian from past times.........is there anyone in the 21st century who finds Charlie Chaplin even remotely funny?

I thought it did a great job of showing the tight friendship between the two. Very deserving of an Oscar, but probably too much of a niche film for the general public.

Keaton? The Marxes? Laurel and Hardy? I still find them funny.

And Charlie Chaplin? which was after all my question!
To describe Norman Wisdom as `Awful` is a bit harsh, millions would disagree with you.
I have a feeling that you probably do not like George Formby either?

    Sure.

I can't call Chaplin movies laugh riots, but he was immensely talented, and that skill still comes through...

  12. I thought it was very well done, and wonderful acting from the two leads.

Since it's the holidays, thought I'd put a link in to my favorite Laurel & Hardy short, Big Business. Hope it's not too off-topic:

Nope, though I concede he has charm and his songs still amuse me. Never liked Wisdom, to be honest. Had the same effect on me as Jerry Lewis did...

Chaplin, I know is a great artist; a game-changer - but laugh at his films? You have me on that one.

I agree with you on that one!
Jerry Lewis and Danny Kaye would have me rushing for the OFF button.

I loved it really appreciated it. I wasn't a Laurel and Hardy fan most of my life. To be honest, I don't know why. But when I saw this film and got a good idea of what those guys were about as well as the other people in their lives- that really turned my head around.

Michael Caine is one of the sailors, not one of the Teddy Boys. And Oliver Reed is younger

Chaplin is hilarious. I've seen the chase scene in The Circus a million times, but I still laugh every single time.
