And yet... it's the same characters, it's Bond, it's M, it's Q, it's Miss Moneypenny, it's MI6... so it is the same, yet it isn't the same. You see my point? They have yet to remake a Sean Connery film -- I consider Casino Royale to be a standalone film that has no relation to the 1967 comedy -- so they're kind of all one continuing story. There are fans who have arranged a "chronological" order for the films, but it's a little confusing given the technology shown and the nature of the stories... like the outer-space stuff in You Only Live Twice.

I swear to god, that was discussed and they opted to let it go. In fact, I am the guy who dropped in the 2004 replacement Jedi shot showing the "trilogy" ghosts (Anakin, Yoda, and Obiwan) in the scene. We worked very hard to try to get the glow color identical between all three, but I always felt like the eyelines didn't work. And Yoda is not that tall. Eh... not my movie.

Lucas is surprisingly non-technical, and has insisted for more than 30 years that the films are fantasy and not science fiction. There's very little science in these films -- you just have to buy into the religious/philosophical stories and characters.

There has long been a debate in the SF community about Star Trek vs. Star Wars, and the general thinking is that Trek is relatively hard science, while Star Wars is "space fantasy" (whatever that is). Any film series where magic and mind-reading are significant plot elements diverges from science fiction and moves towards fantasy. And in fantasy, the rules are pretty much whatever you make up. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are good examples.

There are far more story inaccuracies than you think in Star Wars. Read this:

So, according to the news today, that planet with the wreckage of the 2nd Death Star is called Kef Bir – not Endor.

I immediately thought of some of the stories that hit around the release of Robert Iger's memoir. For example, this story from the Hollywood Reporter:

'Star Wars' and Disney's Search for a Direction

There were even some sketchy reports that suggested Disney went so far as to not reuse names from the PT and OT, or to do so sparingly, because they would have to pay royalties to Lucas. I presume that would include names of places as well as characters. Hence Jakku instead of Tatooine.

Rumor: Disney Killing Off Iconic Star Wars Characters Because George Lucas Still Financially Attached - Bounding Into Comics

Of course this is the kind of thing that would never be confirmed or denied. Just simply ignored. I'm inclined to put a some faith in this sort of thing being the reason for some of the more alarming choices in the ST though.

Also, Exhibit A & B (Galaxy's Edge in Anaheim and Orlando, respectively). Both based on ST.

Isn't there a wide shot that shows Yoda is actually sitting *on* something?

No, I just checked the scene and he's not sitting or standing on anything.

There are some who wonder if we're gonna wind up with something like this at the end of Episode 9:

This more accurately shows how big Yoda is, which is maybe 2-1/2 feet tall at most. Once again, we have that problem of, "well, how old do you look when you get to be a Force Ghost?" Should you look young? Old? In the middle? Howcum Obiwan looks old, but Anakin looks young? Kind of a mess, eh?

No, totally wrong. Disney bought 100% of Lucasfilm, and that even included the real estate, the toy rights, the copyrights, music, story rights, characters, Skywalker Sound, ILM, the works. Everything. Lucas doesn't get to approve anything. When he walked away, he walked away from everything.

Any consultation after the fact is just done as a courtesy, but Disney's execs are not so courteous that they'll automatically do what he advises. Lucas and Ron Howard have been friends for more than 45 years, so it would figure that George would agree to visit his set and give him free advice (for a day), which he did, but it still didn't help Solo much.

My guess is that they're inventing new names and new worlds because they can, not because they have to.

I think the last shot of this movie will be force ghost Luke & Leia. I would just about bet my paycheck on it.

Yes, Yoda is indeed sitting on a wooden walkway railing inside the Ewok Village between Anakin and Obi-Wan in a final wide shot for both versions of Return of the Jedi!

I honestly have no recollection of Yoda standing on a log, which is weird when you consider he's a ghost and has no physical weight. I would bet he's up that high purely for his eyeline, which would be weird if it were 2 feet lower.

There were more than a few things in the movie where I was told, "yeah, it sort of doesn't really make logical sense, but it looks cool." That's an almost literal quote.

I would be very surprised if they didn't find a way to honor Carrie Fisher at the end.

BTW, I was just told that Rise of Skywalker is in fact finished and they are having last-minute touch-ups right now. I think it is officially locked by November 20th, so final VFX drop-ins are being done in the next 30 days. The initial mix is done in a week according to my source, Dolby Atmos the week after that. I'm looking forward to it, but to hell with buying tickets now. I do need to avoid reading reviews, though.

Plus...Lucas is a huge Disney shareholder. If Disney profits,he profits. So if a Star Wars movie makes money,h makes money. So if the theory is Disney is trying to keep from giving money to George Everytime they make a new Star Wars movie, then Disney is failing miserably.

Star wars isn't sci fi. It's a fairy tale, and doesn't hold to the strict laws of science as it isn't sci fi.

I mean, it's sci-fi like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers is sci-fi.

Sure wish you were around to tell Lucas that in 1981 when the subtitle was added for the theatrical re-release. Might have saved us all a whole lot of trouble.

I honestly think that a guy like Lucas doesn't worry about money at this point. (I think he did at one time, but not now.) He's said many times that he could have made 10X more money if he had licensed every offer that came through the door, but he turned a lot of bad stuff down... The Star Wars Holiday Special notwithstanding.

I can see him really vent behind closed doors.
    Maybe just maybe he did.:D

Puzzling quote from JJ on Palpatine..

"Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit the idea of Palpatine, and I completely understand that. But if you’re looking at the nine films as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all the set-ups of what we’re in IX are there in plain view."

...well by that logic, Anakin should be in IX. By that logic, characters who die in the middle of the book have to be at the end of the book?

I suspected this would happen when they announced that Kevin Feige was getting involved in developing a Star Wars movie.

'Star Wars' Shocker: 'Game of Thrones' Duo Quits Planned Trilogy

The pair were set to produce the 2022 film, the first to come after this year's 'Rise of Skywalker.'

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have exited their planned Star Wars series over 18 months after Disney and Lucasfilm first announced they were joining.

"We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too," Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. "Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away."

Cool. More poo for the fandom menace to fling at the wall.

I'm not even remotely lukewarm (ha) for a new set of non-Skywalker-related films and I'm annoyed in advance.

The Hermit Wavin' that magick glowstick since 1976

That was a last-minute re-shoot (the crappy CGI and terrible compositing should attest to that!)... there was a similar scene between Obi-Wan and Mace Windu - minus Yoda - shot during initial principle photography that worked much better and rightfully should have been included in the final theatrical cut.

    Thank the good Lord :wiggle:!!!

If Disney are really smart, they'll put off the already-scheduled release dates for new SW movies, concentrate on the Disney+ series' and let the movies rest for a good long while... at least a decade... they've already made back their initial $4bn acquisition price for Lucasfilm, everything else is gravy at this point...

This is true. Let The Mandalorian and Clone Wars breathe for a little while.

Unless they stoke the nerd fires and make a KOTOR adaptation of some kind.

You know that's not going to happen, Disney wants to maintain a lock on the holiday season and SW will take care of 2022/24/26. I guess they could always plug those dates with a Marvel release.
