Got two discs that EAC peaks ID as mastering 4. I think maybe these discs were swapped into different artwork at some time, or maybe one of them. As for the discs themselves, they are: MCA US MCAD 37214 (no DIDX anywhere on discs)/Matrix: MCAD-37214-1 1C MFD BY JVC and MCA US MCAD 37214 (no DIDX anywhere on discs)/Matrix: MCAD-37214-1 1J MFD BY JVC Both have barcodes on back artwork. If I'm not mistaken, the SHM disc uses the same mastering as the most recent (1999/2000) disc. Though it'd be nice to see that confirmed with peak levels.
FYI, I have a 1999 that matches mastering #1, but it's a Columbia House pressing I got on yourmusic. Here's the matrix code, nonetheless: Matrix: 088 112 0562R1 01$ Q Etched on inner ring: MADE IN USA BY EDC / IFPI 0396
After what we've found out so far, this is very doubtful. Masterings 3,6, and 7 are from the same digtial master. If anything, #7 came out later than the others.
Why is the order of the masterings so random? It starts with the 1999 remaster, and the three almost identical early masterings (3,6 and 7) are not grouped.
The order of the masterings are just the order that the peak levels came in, either from my own collection (first 3) or here on this board. I still have 3, 6 & 7 listed separately so I can identify the small variations in the peak levels. I think they're from the same digital master as well, but some people on here think it's not so until they're convinced as well I'll list it like this. Anyway, here's another update: AJA Mastering 1: 93.8/94.3/94.3/94.3/94.3/94.3/94.2 MCA Remaster 1999 (Made in EU) 811 745 LC01056 UN899 / Matrix: 50117 811745-2 03/(Made in Germany by Universal M&L) Columbia House ?? / Matrix: 088 112 0562R1 01$ Q (Etched on inner ring: MADE IN USA BY EDC / IFPI 0396) Mastering 2: 81.4/99.6/89.1/97.2/100.0/89.1/95.0 MCA Citizen boxed set MCAD 4-10981 / Matrix: MCAD4109814 Y3C1C MFD BY JVC Mastering 3: 90.8/91.7/90.6/88.7/96.3/86.2/97.6 MCA Japan for USA 1984 MCAD-37214 DIDX 55 (no barcode) / Matrix: MCAD-37214-T5E21 MCA US for US MCAD 37214 DIDY 55 (no barcode) / CRC club version (Disc: MCAD-37214 above DIDY 55 above CRC) / Matrix: CI 5650-1 (plus another code that has been scratched out) MCA UK MCA DMCL 1745 (disc: MCA US MCAD-37214) / Matrix: MCAD-37214-1T24 MCA USA DIDX 55 / Matrix: DIDX 000055 3 Mastering 4: 81.4/100.0/100.0/97.4/99.8/100.0/90.4 MCA US MCAD 37214 DIDX 55 (no barcode) / Matrix: MCAD-37214-1 1C15 MFD BY JVC MCA Canada MCABD 37214 DIDX 55 ("Price Code I") / Matrix: MFG BY CINRAM #921120H MCA-37214 MCA Canada MCABD 37214 Cineram / Matrix: LT40 MCABD37214 #40830V04 11 MCA US MCAD 37214 (no DIDX anywhere on discs)/Matrix: MCAD-37214-1 1C MFD BY JVC MCA US MCAD 37214 (no DIDX anywhere on discs)/Matrix: MCAD-37214-1 1J MFD BY JVC Mastering 5: 66.7/62.4/85.8/72.2/79.1/57.6/85.4 MFSL Ultradisc UDCD 515 / Matrix: MANUFACTURED BY ULTECH UDCD 515 SMF8084-1A Mastering 6 (nearly identical to mastering 3): 90.7/91.7/90.8/88.9/96.3/86.2/97.5 MCA Germany MCD 01745 DMCL 1745 / Matrix: SONOPRESS I-5627/MCD01745 A1 Mastering 7 (confirmed as Steve Hoffman's mastering, nearly identical to 3 & 6): 90.7/91.7/90.8/88.9/96.3/86.1/97.5 MCA US DIDX-000055 / Matrix: MCAD-37214 DIDX 55
I have the first(?) pressing from Japan with the sticky OBI. Do you want/need peak levels for that one? Be glad to help out. -s1m0n-
With a VDP catalogue number? That one's not listed yet. One of my copies is also from 1984, that's mastering 3. I don't know which of the 2 came first.
Well, I kinda wish we had just continued the existing thread and built on the list I started, but since this thread persists, let me try to reconcile the two. I'm referring to the list I referred to above, here. Yours -- Mine -- Notes 1 -- 7 -- 1999 remaster 2 -- 6 -- Glenn Meadows master (1993). Citizen Steely Dan box set. 3 -- 1a -- Japan pressings (32XD, 20P2). Virtually the same as Steve's. See below. 4 -- 4 -- US JVC master (1991?). Described as "bright". Mastering engineer unknown. 5 -- 5 -- Mobile Fidelity 6 -- ? -- See below. 7 -- 1 -- Steve's master. See below. There is a strong argument in the other thread that (your) 3, 6, and 7 are essentially the same (IIRC the belief was that the differences are so digitally insignificant that they couldn't be different except in the strictest sense of the term "master"), so it might be helpful to group those together for the sake of discussion. Of course it will remain an open question, but I think it's better that they're batched together. Also, IMO chronological order is helpful. I'm not convinced your 6 is something distinct. I think EAC has been known to produce erroneous peak values. Also, you attribute 6 to a CD in your list that I attributed to (your) 7. All my attributions came out of reports in that other thread, so you might have a look to see if one of us mis-reported. There are some pressing in my list missing from yours (e.g. my 1a). You might look through my list and add those to yours. Again, everything there was distilled from the thread reports. I had tried to include the mastering engineer where it was known. I'm still interested in figuring out who did the others. The big question I asked there, and will ask again here, is -- where is the Nichols master? Nobody can identify it, which is just really strange to me.
I started this new thread to identify every detail of the discs listed. That previous thread of which your list was a summary didn't always list matrix numbers and a lot of versions got listed more than once, making the thread a bit of a mess. Seeing a disc switched between 6 & 7 and seeing nearly identical matrix numbers in different masterings once again leads me to believe that 3, 6 & 7 are in fact one and the same master. Can anybody please list the Nichols master? You all know there's that huge frequency gap, so one of you must have it?
Yes, the EAC peak levels for the SHM disc are the same as the peak levels for the 1999/2000 disc: SHM-CD: UICY-90764 / Matrix: MVCZ-10077-1 5W V IFPI L244 93.8 / 94.3 / 94.3 / 94.3 / 94.3 / 94.3 / 94.2 Only difference is the Super High Material...
While I am at it, here are the peak levels of the VDP disc I own: Made in Japan, 1984 / Cat n#: VDP-27 / Matrix: VDP 27 1 1 (I think, there are some other markings etched into the disc that are illegible) 100.0 / 89.5 / 95.8 / 100.0 / 100.0 / 96.5 / 97.0 My cd player shows a total time of 39:43 I really like this mastering
On the left we have the null test for mastering 3 & 7, on the right we have the null test for mastering 1 & 3. All with a spectral view, in the time domain and in the frequency domain: The frequency spectrum on the left doesn't match the test I did earlier with exactly the same disc and wav-sample. I guess we can conclude that either EAC or Adobe audition make errors here.
